DC offset - what level is acceptable for a track?

I notice that a track from In Sides by Orbital has just over a 0.1% DC offset. Is this a negligible amount? Is there an agreed standard?

I would say the less the better is a good standard?

I doubt the figure. How do you measure that? Averaged on the whole track? Try to look for a silent piece (in a fade in or fade out) and zoom in on the vertical axis. There you can see for yourself weather it really has a DC offset.

It could be the result of a base kick where the first half cycle is louder than the rest. I wouldn't worry, seems neglectable. Why do you worry? Gonna chop it up and remix? Only then it will make a difference. As long as you play the complete track its OK.

In numeric terms, a DC offset of 0.1% in 16 bits sampling would mean the track is offset by the number 32. That is a -54dB click at the beginning & end.

Yes, average.

I'm just curious.

So using a 'remove DC offset' function based on the average level for the track can actually create a DC offset for silent passages.

You got it :)

Using a highpass filter won't though.

Yeah, I tend to just do lots of low cut below about 30hz. I'm not sure this is the best solution. The question is, where and how steep should that filter be? I think filtering might also affect phase information (don't quote me though).
