Cubase 10 "Snap to Grid" help please...

I started having trouble editing my MIDI, and then I noticed that my "Snap" setting was on something called "Relative" grid. This apparently just throws MIDI notes somewhere close to the grid without rhyme or reason. How is this even remotely useful?

More importantly, somehow this is now the default setting for all my new projects. I've searched "preferences" and the online Cubase manual, but I can't seem to find any instruction on how to change this setting back to "Grid."

Can anyone help please?

There is a drop down menu with the grid options:

In Key Editor, similarly:

If this is broken, I would trash and rebuild preferences. However I keep running into a probable bug (have seen it reproduced) where a track will not toggle [back] to musical time (it's the notes in the track which are stuck to linear), which was not a corruption.

I occasionally use snap in Key Editor to exploit the Quantize Panel, having created tuplets, and I've never had a problem switching in and out. I use snap in Project Editor w some frequency for convenience, never failed.

Actually Grid Relative is the one I use most often and find the most useful.....let us say I have one note that doesn't start exactly on the beat.... copying/moving it by a few bars without Relative Grid moves it to snap on the bar, which I don't want. If I play it late/early I want to always have it copied late/early. For me it is even more useful in Audio events, where snap points come into play. If I the audio starts just before the beat it is copied as such.
I thought Cubase usually remembers which one you used last, but if, like me, you use templates, just select the one you want in your template and resave the templates.

Thank you all. Very enlightening.
I am familiar with how to move around the project window for snap and the various options. It's setting the default for Grid for all new projects that I'm a bit baffled by. I don't see a specific PREFERENCES section for it.
Although, I suppose I could just create a project preset and go with that.
Thank you all again. Nice to know that fellow Cubase enthusiasts are on the case.

Most welcome. But yeah There isn't a preference afaik. Templates are often the answer :)

"on how to change this setting back to "Grid.""

Heh, I thought you were stuck with it. I would think it's going to open the last view you had. But there actually is that in preferences so it could well open randomly or some shit. But no, there is no Preference for the type of Grid setting by default. The original default is the basic one you want. But set open last view as your preference and you should be good.
