Hi,
I am recording a condenser mic into a mixer then into my 1010LT m-audio sound card into ableton. It sporadically starts doing this bad distortion thing, and i am trying to locate problem.
Its not the mixer, i switched them out, and its not the channels. I have 2 sound cards with 20 channels of audio recording. Also ive tried shutting off all other imputs while recording.

Sounds like the sound is intermitted at a high rate... Would be curious to see the WAV zoomed in on individual sample level.
You could get something alike with a faulty mic cable.

Sounds like a buffer under run/over run (can never remember which is which!). Try DPC Latency Checker ( https://www.thesycon.de/eng/latency_check.shtml ) and see if you get any nasty red bars. You could also maybe try a larger buffer size in either your device software or Ableton itself

wouldn't raising the buffer make it harder to record with the mass latency? also why would it suddenly come in and out. Hypothetically if it was having dpc latency, would could be done about it? Im going to test it now

I also was thinking it could be buffer underruns. Some program checking for updates or a bad wifi driver...

Mass latency? Can be compensated, or just shift the recording in time.

what might you suggest i do to troubleshoot?
