HI
I just got a new tft monitor (very nice and easy on the eyes!) but was concerned by a pixel towards the top corner that shows up on windows as a lighter shade of the blue background colour - the thing I want to know is what does a dead pixel look like!
Does it show as black or what?
When I put an icon over the pixel it shows through, but then again the windows icons are translucant, aren't they.
When I put something like a scroll bar over it nothing shows through - am I to assume it is a corruption of the windows screen?
Flipper.

A TFT pixel consists of 3 leds in the colours red, green & blue. A pixel becomes dead if one of them doesn't go on or off anymore.
Usually the led won't go off anymore. You'll see either red, green or blue when it should be completely black. If you move your mouse pointer over it and pay attention to its black boundary it's quite clear.
Some monitors come with a dead pixel warranty, so if you got one within x months you can get a replacement. There also used to be norms, like two dead pixel less than 1 inch from the border is tolerable. Read your warranty leaflet.

if you don't have any warranty anymore, I'm afraid you'll have to live with it or have the screen replaced

Replacement on only 2 dead pixels? Doubtful. Try 8 dead pixels before some of them are willing to replace the tft under warantee. It can happen to any TFT. The two I got are clean, but I count myself lucky.

5%????2windy wrote:I got a green one 5 days after purchase. Apparently they are not deemed faulty until you have either 5 pixels or 5% dead. Can't remember which!?!

Yup! Not that much you can do about it. I got one
pixel on my laptop that is broken but it is the
blue that is broken so you really don´t see it unless
you got a darker colors over it. (Lucky me)
You got virtually millions of reasons to get broken pixels and yes the companies will not do anything
unless you got a bunch of them in the center of the
screen. Edges=be happy , Dark pixels=be happy , Light pixels=be bored.
But you get used to it........

I think it's rediculous..DevonB wrote:
5%????That be a LOT of pixels!
Depends on the manufacturer. 5 to 8 seems to be about the norm from what I read when I researched my TFT's.

1 pixel is too much, when you buy a television you don't want any missing pixels either
if you want to run your machine at 1280x1024 you want 1280x1024 not 1279x1023
it's a bullshit policy

HI
Whatever it is I can live with it - tbh it's more trouble than its worth sending the thing back but I wouldn't like to see this practice spread to other things IE as long as only 1 in 20 of the synths features are non-functional we can not accept responsibility

In a TFT monitor, pixels consist of three transistors: red, green and blue, so you can have many different scenarios of a one-third-dead pixel or two-thirds dead pixel for each of the red, green or blue dead transistor. If any of the transistors are dead, the pixel is dead, too, and then it looks accordingly: redish, blueish, greenish... Just imagine: if you have a pixel who's red component [transistor] is dead, how would it look like? And yes, it's veeery annoying. I hate dead pixels, that's why I still use CRT monitors, but technology is progressing and one day...
I think there's a comprehensive article about TFT's and how they work on www.tomshardware.com somewhere, if you want to know more about it.
Anyway, it doesn't look good, now, does it?
. My condolences, man...
Cheers.

Considering that a standard 1280x1024 TFT display has something in the realm of 1.3 million pixels, it's pretty remarkable that the number of dead or non-performing ones is so low. But, from what I understand, one of the reasons that TFT prices are as low as they are (relatively speaking of course, when compared with just a few years ago), is because of a more relaxed tolerance for pixel failure. Apparently, if the TFT manufacturers were to adhere to a strict zero defect policy, it would drive prices through the roof. I honestly think that most people would rather roll the dice and potentially end up with a few dead pixels over paying dramatically higher prices. Besides, if you're writing music, then what does this really matter? Prices are so low for 17" TFTs now that you could buy two for what a single one used to cost just 2 years ago.

HI
WTF!
My system is possessed - I have just switched back to my CRT and the f**king 'dud' pixel is still there ..... AAAHHHHHHHHH!
Does anyone have any evidence of monitor/graphical based demonic possession?
This is highly irregular ..
