I was working on a project last night that really could have benefited from in-place editing. But I just spent too much money on the z3ta+ group buy and a new pair of AKG-K501 headphones, so it's going to have to wait.

i'm very content with it .
i've been using cubase since many years (began with VST v 3.5) and found the updates always to add something i felt being worth the (not very small) amount of $$$ .
i have a stable setup since about 6 years (with XP it became also stable OS-wise) and so i hardly needed to think about if i get the SX3 update and it proofed to work fine like i'm used to .
i think you should have a read about the new features (or all the features if you're new to it) , read on www.cubase.net if a feature is missing or something with the app which could be a handicap for you , and give it some time and compare with the other sequencers which might do the same job .

This is Cubase, for godssake--wait until the bug swarm clears, IMHO.

I guess the real concern that i have is the midi.
I'm used to logic, but i feel that i'm staying behind, since there are no other updates for this program...
Now, i saw Cubase SX3, the new features... OUTSTADING!
But i'm wondering, Logic is a great host for midi, how does it compare to Cubase...
Cubase on the other hand seems great for audio... without putting any host down, it seems like a very professional host (much like it feels with Protools)...
What do you people think?
Thanks!

HI
I moved from Logic to SX a few days ago - I can't understand the audio-midi thingy comparisson, they both have adequate full screen piano-roll pages and in-depth editing of midi-parametres.
Now if you was comparing these with say Live or Tracktion I would say there are bigger differences!

Yeah, sx is very complete now, i can't wait to get the update! i have some friends, ex-logic users and they're happy with sx, they were missing some logic effects of course, but hostwise they loved it. btw nothing stops you to bounce some unique effects and loading them into sx.
cheers

But the SX Drum Editor sucks compared to the Logic Hyper Editor . I'm awaiting the Samplitude V8 demo and although I wouldn't use Sonar the V4 videos look very impressive especially the comping stuff .

I'm with ya, i don't like the drum editor either...that's why i never use it, they should think of a step editor or something, for quick programming it can be really annoying... but well i love the rest so...

very very stable here - dont think they'll be too many bug fixes needed
new stuff seems OK - less clunky than before with lots of shortcuts but im not sure how often ill use the really new features
freeze is vastly improved tho - its quick and you can freeze inserts
in line editing is nice - the send for external effects hasnt been used yet but that sounds nice
and whats wrong with the drum editor ? - it works fine as a step sequencer

RNJ huh...
You the guy I used to play Operation Flashpoint with online?
You also design studio's? Either that or you're a drummer?
Just wondering... I know the name from somewhere.

HI
I NEVER used the hyper editor in Logic, but I can think of many ways to play around with drums in SX; Rewire Reason in for DR REX or Re-Drum, or any other good host that facilitates a better (for you) drum handling, ERA or EST for an extremely flexable Drum grid interface with modulation possibilities to die for, use quantisize in the piano-roll - which is the same thing (ALMOST) as a step sequencer, BRING IN Microtonic as a vsti for step-sequencing, not to mention the loop/midi programs like Phatmatik, AMG/Recycle - the list is almost endless - and most of these will go way beyond hyperedit.
I think SX like all the other 'big' sequencers will never be 'Exactly' like everyone wants it to be but I personally couldn't wait around forever hoping that the 'perfect' (never to be) elusive host would turn up - I dropped LOGIC for a variety of reasons and am happy that I can get on with making MUSIC

I've pretty recently gone from VST5.1->SX2.2, and I have to say that I don't find the midi side of things as good. There are some new functions, but the overall feel to midi work is that they've increased the number of clicks I need to make to edit midi fully. Just little things like the right click tool bar - too much mouse scrolling (I don't use a mouse with a wheel because I have to use a different type of handheld mouse - RSI etc
). SX seems to be designed specifically for wheel mice only.
I don't see anything drastically better for midi in SX3.
On the other hand - I agree about the audio side of things; SX is streaks ahead of VST5.1 for audio, there's not really anything extra I need for audio.
If it's only midi you're concerned about, then I'd be tempted to say wait until another update or two. I get the general impression that Steinberg are begining to regret taking away so many of the good midi bits from VST5.1 - all they get are whinges about it (even though I think they deserve a pat on the back for making it so powerful with audio).
I'll give an example about how I think they've gone backwards with midi - when I edit any midi pattern note - every time I move a note, I get a double sounding of the new note. It's only a minor thing, but it seems that almost any midi edit does this. It doesn't crash, next time around the cycle it plays perfectly well, but it's irritating. It's a sign that midi is not rock solid like it used to be. And it's sad ... It always used to be that midi editing was Cubase's real strong point - it may not have been as completely rock solid with its timing as Logic, but the editing side was so easy and intuitive, and live editing didn't dick around with the sound like it does now.
Other little things like quick edits of start or end points or note lengths - It's become more long winded. You have to raise up the little + or - sign and do a sloooooooooooooow edit - there's no fast edit speed like the old left and right mouse button trick. I can't access things like transpose as quickly either. All no big deals on their own, but it slows the whole midi editing process down. There appears to be no more ghost editing either - if there is, then I can't find it. Used to be a simple alt click to ghost (or was it ctrl click?) and then you edit the one part to affect every ghost part. Seems like SX has farted that one out of its system
I could be wrong, but I think it will be SX4 or even 5 before Cubase gets back on top of the pile with midi.
But I'm not whinging, really...even at SX2.2, I am so thrilled with all of the new audio stuff. The plugins are so much better than they used to be too. But I haven't read anything that makes SX3 sound any better midiwise.
