Hi,
I'm playing guitar in a rock/dance band, and we are going to do a new tour within 3 months. During live performance, we always used an akai 5000 sampler and a midi player to play the samples. The only thing that needs to be done is playing 8 audio tracks, and a couple of midi tracks with program changes for controlling a couple of 19 inch effects.
I would love to switch over to a laptop with an 8 audio output and midi break out box to do this job, because that would be more flexible and easier to program, but i'm still not sure which software and hardware I should use....
I'm thinking about a Mac power book with something from Metric Halo or Motu.
Do you guys have any tips?
Thanx very much in advance,
RuleKinG

Hmmm, the setup with the akai + midi sequencer sounds rock solid to me. If it works OK then why change it and spend the money?
Personally I don't like laptops on the podium. Far too risky with beer flying around, cables being tred on (it will come down one day!) and always the risk after coming back from a short break it ain't there anymore.
There are a couple of options for you. One is a USB -> ADAT device connected to a Behringer ADA8000 I think it is.
Just curious: one of the outputs gets routed to the headphones of the drummer? Without proper monitoring its impossible to keep in sync.

If you're thinking of throwing in any kind of sampled material into a live show,Live is the answer. If you split your backing tracks into verse/chorus samples, you can do complete rearrangements on the fly-including tempo stretching and transposition.Try the demo-it was made for what you're talking about

Thanx for the reactions
The AKAI is rock solid indeed, but it's hell to program it. You have to bounce al the samples to disc and copy them one by one to the hard disk, which is a too small old SCSI disk, and very hard to get second hand. During rehearsels, you cannot change a song structure easily.
I already checked the Live, it looks very cool,
but we don't really need the real-time changing of the songs, more just an 8 audio track player and a midi output. I also read that Live cannot do program changes....? I really need that to control my Line6 Vetta amplifier.
We are getting sponsored by Apple for 2 laptops. And of course the drummer uses an in-ear system with click track.C00kie wrote:If it works OK then why change it and spend the money?
