Ghost Dog wrote: Wed Dec 19, 2018 2:07 pm At first, I tested the new D3 and try VA saw sounded better, but I didn't have D2 for comparison. After I've had the chance to A/B them properly, the similarities were much more apparent, since they're re almost identical, apart from the first two octaves. D3 sounds a bit "harder" (in a good way) and Reaper' oscilloscope confirms this.

The new VA pulse is also different and IMHO better.

I stopped carring about DUNE's on board oscillators as soon as made two WT banks while I still had the license. One with vintage style saw oscillator (which to my ears sounds better for most applications and compliments the filters in DUNE much better) and one with clean pulses of various widths.

I don't think we're gonna hear things about the audio engine from SA. They're a semi-transparent company at best (and that's a generous euphemism), so I don't think they'll talk about it.
Do you mind sharing those wavetables with us

Preferring wavetables over the VA and FM oscillators is a mistake, I think. At least in theory, the VA and FM should be superior, as they are synthesized versus static, optimized during numerous pro tests versus pasted together by ..., and the VA should have some non-linearities going while the FM is mathematically perfect versus the wavetable soup you could boil in your kitchen.

Of course reality may differ (VA and FM not that great), and if you make WT with a character vastly different from the VA and FM, no wonder you could like the WT more.

Problem with VA and FM is that they are what they are, and there are not that many options to change the sound going out of them. Other oscillators on other synths are more complex and give more space to dive for a sound.

But I think that was on purpose. DUNE is a character synth.

I've already posted them. You can find them on DUNE3's page (used to be D2's page), under "banks and patches".

It's all in the same zip file.

Cinebient, I think you'll like this patch. It has an ambient feel. Got lost with it for what seemed like hours yesterday:

Nice cinematic sounds :phones: Does it depend on Dune 3 specific features?

I hear some vowel filters here, so most probably yes.
You may think you can fly ... but you better not try

To be fair Kevin is a pro for sure in this area.
His Dune 2 cinematic presets can do similar things (and his presets in other synths as well) but Dune 3 adds just much more for me personally, also in this area.
My favorite synth demo ever is still this:

Now these running also in Dune 3 and you can go much further.
However, in general i find Dune 3 (together with P900) the best synth (not counting synths with sample import) for cinematic sound design.
Also for pads (oh do we not all like pads :) ), soundscapes and interesting textures i think Dune 3 is my first choice (together with Alchemy).

Thank‘s! Will try that later since i‘m on the way (shopping for Christmas...which deserves it‘s own horror theme. The Red Hell preset comes to mind, lol).

Yes. I mean you can do vowels with Dune 2 as well with audio rate modulations but the vowel filter in Dune 3 is just very very good!

Just playing around with Dune 3 again (demo version) and i think this could literally be the best softsynth out there. I know thats a stupid thing to say in many ways. but you have in Dune 3, a synth that can do modern wavetable sounds, and can do seriously good analog sounds. It has the Moog style filter from the best emulation of the model D ever created, as mentioned, the vowel filter is insanely good. In fact, all the filters are some of the best out there.
Then the FX - these are professional quality FX units, most with multiple algos/types. It has a ton of really usable and unique unison styles, then add the insane voice stacking.
Plus another thing - the envelopes!! There is something about these envelopes that drives me wild!!

As people have mentioned - the mod matrix isa bit of a bummer, but its really not all that bad, and the modulators themselves are great (love the MSEG) All in all it encapsulates perfectly everything we love about those modern, mid sized contemporary sounding synths, but adds a sound that is really authentic and life like.

In the last year, i have been moving away from the falcons and avengers, over to these mid sized synths. Mostly because the workflow is so good. When writing songs, things come together so quickly that you never lose focus - which leads to better results...and dune 3 seems to be a great example of that (though the demo does not have automation, so i have not been able to make a full track with it)

Have been looking at the modulars recently (Voltage, softube etc) and last night was just about to pull the trigger on voltage...but Dune has me holding off...

Dune 3 (demo v3.0.1) doesn't show in Maschine's All Instruments (but of course it show with the others, the non NKS synths, in the adding (+) menu).
As you see below, Dune 2 and The Legend show in the menu, so I can browse/review sounds in Maschine's browser:

No synth is perfect. But sonically nothing so far can touch Dune 3 (maybe the new Waldorf Valkyrie/Kyra when that comes out). Some of the on board effects are sold as separate products. The EQ for example is a highly regarded parametric EQ for the rack extension format. The Moog filter doesn't sound exactly the same as the one on the Legend, it may have had a few adjustments or had the parameter ranges changed. I think Dune is still the market leader when it comes to Oscillator stacking AFAIK no one else has tried to implement such a feature.
