50 instances may be a lot, 'orchestral'. It may run better from the internal SSD. I'm doing everything from one internal SSD but it's a newer one. When I had less to work with, an external SSD changed little to nothing for the better really.
The internal connection may be faster than the USB, and the ext. drive may connect as though it's USB2. Then there's the drive looking for samples all over the place. Back in the day we defragged drives to optimize that a bit.
