Why the iLok hate?

That is not a specific iLok issue. As if you could download any product if the server is unavailable.morelia wrote: Fri Dec 28, 2018 11:55 amFor example:So if I have just registered a product, and then see this message, who knows what is happening right now. And because of the Gobbler shit Softube use I can't even download the product until "currently unavailable" is over.Server Unavailable
The server is currently unavailable. This may be due to a scheduled maintenance or a service outage of some kind.
There is no estimate for when the server will be available.

That error message is from the iLok license manager. I shouldn't have mentioned the download issue as it is painful to explain what is happening. That was more just a little hissy fit, but I should have just left it at pointing out the iLok issue.sfd wrote: Fri Dec 28, 2018 12:07 pmThat is not a specific iLok issue. The error message doesn't mean that unavailability of a server is an iLok specific issue.

Morelia I just recommend you to be careful, even worse is a "problem" with Ilok when some update for your system is required or something different and Ilok (for some very strange reason?) doesn't even recognize you or your machine anymore and "your license" is lost. It occurred to me and other people have reported this disgusting "bug"; so you would need to ask for help to the company that provided you the license or pay an additional fee to Ilok/Pace for further "protection for your licenses".morelia wrote: Fri Dec 28, 2018 12:19 pmThat error message is from the iLok license manager. Try to find a better and honest software company that respect you as the owner of your truly license/key/code, don't fall in wrong hands. Best regards.

never had an issue until today.
iLok servers are down making it impossible to register new software.
I guess this could happen to any system that uses online registration.

True.
Fact is that you, unless you bought a boxed software and got the serial in the box, are dependent on internet to get your serial/key/license. No mater the type of licensing system.
As for that other comment about iLok not recognizing the machine. That is not an iLok issue, either. It's an OS issue.

2 things:
• I don't say there is a problem with Internet and download your key/liscence/code, there is not problem with that and you don't need to exaggerate with a box analogy to support your wrong and unjustified declarations, the problem has to do with companies that make you completely dependent of them in order to the software to work, if the company is not there in a future, you will no have the software you paid for neither.
• A global company like Ilok/Pace should be completely aware about these updates and knowing something like that can easily happen, but instead of help with better measures or at least give the opportunity to the user to recover "their license", there is not way for that, so you have to pay for additional fee for "protection", very disgusting.
But go ahead.

iLok as well as any other software will work as long as it's compatible with the OS. There's also something called virtualization.

I dislike iLok for a very practical reason:
I use my production laptop on location, often taking it to various places, and the last thing I need is to forget to take a dongle like iLok (or e-Licenser) and be unable to use my software.
Worse still, I’m affraid of leaving the dongle on location and then having to beg somebody to find it and post it back to me, risking loss or damage during posting.
Even worse still, I’d hate to have it damaged or lost at any point during my travel to and from location, or at the location.
So all in all, such physical copy protection is the worst possible one for my needs. I just do not buy software which requires a hardware iLok, but I do have its software counterpart and a few plugins that use it (UVI, Kush).
For this reason, I do not mind challange-response copy protection. It’s never been a problem. All systems that use it are very quick and transparent to use.
Having said that, I’m generally put off using Pace and iLok due to all the horror stories that keep popping up all the time.

Ilok an eLicencer both propose software versions -no physical dongle-, wich is kinda similar to all C/R systems (NI etc). Then there are now clouds. All similar, servers are down for whatever reason, and you simply can't install them anymore

Yeah, Ilok will continue working as long as is compatible with the OS as other softwares, but the difference here: Understand the existence of virtual machines that allows you to use even older operative Systems and the fact that you can have your key/liscence/code saved in external hard drive or memory of your choice. In this scenario, the synths, effects, all sort of VSTs will work as long that you have your keys/liscence/code. Is not the same and never will be with Ilok/Pace; you need to pay fees or the dongle (sometimes even 8 times what is the price of a flash drive) in order to "secure your liscences".sfd wrote: Fri Dec 28, 2018 3:53 pm* I suggest you study the concept of recognition.JunSev wrote: Fri Dec 28, 2018 2:53 pmNot an Ilok issue... with all respect, are you delusional?sfd wrote: Fri Dec 28, 2018 2:29 pm True.

At the end you ended up being dependent to Ilok/Pace.

The problem I have with that one is that yes you are right, except for when it is not functioning correctly. Most of the time I have no problems. But as I said pages agao, when it is bad it is really bad. Usually seems to coincide with a late night purchase and then iLok is down so can't register, which then in this can meant the product did not appear in my account. So until iLok starts working I can't even install the product. This really pisses me of, but it will pass. Like I said, good most of the time, but when it's bad it's real bad. And the support is your typical have you restarted your computer, updated to the latest version.sfd wrote: Fri Dec 28, 2018 3:53 pmiLok as well as any other software will work as long as it's compatible with the OS.

@morelia - I find that a bit strange. They use several servers. Could just as well have been your DNS or anything. Difficult to know. But yeah that's not a nice thing when it happens. I once bought a plug-in and had to wait forever to ge tthe mail with the serial due to issues with the mail server.
