acoustic drums on a budget

looking for cheap used drum set, ~$300 range.. guessing i'll be doing more sampling and brush playing. wondering if anyone has any input on the inexpensive manufs., stuff to look for.. i know check the h/w, and the body for cracks. any brands eg. too thin to have nice tone in your opinion, et c? i'm riding a bike :p

I think an awesome addition to any studio is one of those Mapex student kits, they cost about $1000 Nz over here(about $550US) and a second hand kit would be cheap.
They had smaller drums (think the floor tom was a 14!!!!) but in a studio situation would be great cos you get a bit more quality for the same price as a crapshit kit. you'll still need to buy some cymbals etc cos the included ones were pretty shit.
