Bernard Herrmann's theme for Taxi Driver is pretty great I think.

Yes

Other scores that stood out for me were:

Halloween 3 (and others by John Carpenter)

The US version of Solaris (Cliff Martinez)

American Beauty

The score for The Handmaiden is very beautiful and powerful when seen in conjunction with the performances.

But this is a classic.

+1 You beat me to it!
Ditto! The very first theme piece I thought of.
We shall see orchestral machines with a thousand new sounds, with thousands of new euphonies, as opposed to the present day's simple sounds of strings, brass, and woodwinds. -- George Antheil, circa 1925 ---

Someone has to do it. Might as well be me.

This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

I love Irene Cara's singing in Fame (and Flashdance), the piano piece she does with Bruno is my fave though, not the upbeat stuff.

Here's one that I always found remarkably appropriate for a rather haunting film.

Good choice. His opening themes for North by Northwest and Psycho are also two of my favorites.

Vertigo is also good, but it's more a of a slow burn.
