Any advances in automatic sample looping (xfade/spectral/etc)?

I've been out of the sampling game for a while now (more than a decade!) but due to aquiring a few analogue synth things I've become interested again.. so naturally the question of seamless sample looping arises again.

Has there been any advances in AI / intelligent automatic sample looping? Any programs that do a good job of automatically looping sustained portions of samples? Any clever scripts or macros for Reaper that take care of this tedious task?

Any help would be highly appreciated!

Cheers!

Several samplers available with "auto loop tuning" basically they tend to guess the best points to establish a near perfect loop, and then some amount of x-fading applied to polish things up.

Awave Studio can do a decent job, but it takes lots of time studying each possibility.

Which makes the task tedious and at some level, it's better to do it manually...

Techniques like preparing several instances of a sample and round-robin their loop cycles to avoid clicking is one of good solutions. Also applying variety of looping per sample is also a good idea, like having a ping-pong looping style and regular sustained looping, and they overlapping to each other.

I'm guessing that Izotope will release such AI-based audio editor or sampler. Apparently they are one of the few developers who got involved with AI implementation.

There's an action in ReaPack that creates one-button seamless loops of time selections in Reaper - forget the name tho.

Yeah some kind of action for Reaper would probably be most feasible. I'll try to find that action but if you happen to remember it's name let me know. :)

Awesome! Thanks mate!

Do you know Björn Bojahr Endless WAV (Freeware)? It has an automatic sustain loop search function. Just polish with a crossfade. Et voilà!

If you're not on Mac and don't have access to MainStage AutoSampler.
Then Björn Bojahr Session 2 WAV is also worth a look.
  • You record your notes/keys in your favorite DAW in one big WAV-File
  • Open this file in Session 2 WAV
  • Almost automatic slicing, naming each new separate file with MIDI note number (e.g. 60=C3)
  • Everything is saved in the file header!

I've been looking for software to do this for the last couple of years and haven't had much luck.

The latest version of SampleRobot seems to have ok loop detection and xfade looping. It's a bit clunky and feels like it was released too early, but it might be good in a few updates time. Unfortunately it's not exactly a bargain, and the cheaper versions are restricted to exporting at 16bit.

The Reaper script mentioned is better suited to creating atmos style loops/content where the attack or start of the loop is less important.

I remember reading long ago that Imageline added functionality to Edison that would "blur" the loop points so that there would be no clicks. I'm not sure how that might differ from Xfade Looping--seems possibly destructive to the sound, but it may be worth looking into to see if it has merit.
