I was reading a developers rant hereand it made me realize something. Software has nearly ruined all end users.
This guys points are completely true, and even I am guilty of this. All that we have become is a bunch of greedy "give me this feature, give me that feature" whiney babies. This forum is literally crawling with complaints and gripes about how a certain app sucks because the dev left out a feature that a few users think is uber critical. Its almost as if in this day in age where we have MORE options that EVER in recorded(heck even unrecorded) history to express ourselves with music, we would rather just bitch about 1 or 2 missing features...
Now it is good to have a discussion and share ideas which this forum is great for doing. But I dont understand the negativity that seems to fester here.
maybe we end users should take a step back before we decide to rant about something because some software doesnt work like we want it to...

Not unique to software. It has been ever thus. Just that with software, there's often a channel for easy feedback to the people who make it. But back in the olden days things weren't all that different...
Minor godlet: "Say, Apollo, this 'lyre' thingy you invented looks pretty good. But why did you equip it with a 1/4" TS phone jack instead of XLR?"
Apollo: *SMITE SMITE SMITE SMITE SMITE*
Meffy
[edit] I ought to make it clear that I approve of asking about new features. NOT demanding them! *9_9* That is for the birds, and no joking.

You are so right, i came to a realisation several years ago that i was producing a lot more music back when all i had was a micro moog, an L100 (hammond) and an arp string ensemble (solina), then i was when i had so much more to work with. i had to stop worrying about what used to be called MTV (Midi Techno Virus) getting the latest and greatest .. more OSC's, better filters, more more more.. and start playing my analog piano again

Amen to this thread. That link is classic. Love that. People in general just need to shut their stinking pieholes and make the most of the great tools at their disposal. Improvise. Think outside the box. These are things we need to do to feed the artist in us anyways!

What a lame-ass. He should get a new job, that whining soab. He obviously quit, but I would never hire such a wanker.

Well, if he can't take the heat he must get out of the fire. There are nice cozy jobs down in the musicipal sewerage yard. Pay is good too.
If you want to work with customers and earn the real money, take what comes with it. Incompetence is not an excuse.

Easy to add 1 or 2 features to software?! That kind of sweeping generalisation can only come from a non-programmer.cptgone wrote:- it's easy to add 1 or 2 features to software.S_A_P wrote:Its almost as if in this day in age where we have MORE options that EVER in recorded(heck even unrecorded) history to express ourselves with music, we would rather just bitch about 1 or 2 missing features...

I assure you that adding 1 or 2 features may not be easy at all, and in case anyone out there isn't aware of the fact...
Software has more complexity per dollar than any other engineering discipline. So be sure, when developers try to fix things up for us, and make things better, they are working for their money.

Alternatively...
This site may be the best free R&D department any industry could want.
Or do you reckon all those devs hang here cos they like being abused?

What I meant was, it's possible to add features to software. With hardware, it just isn't done. I can't have my bicycle upgraded to a bike, but I can upgrade SX2...

agreed, *some* features may be easy to add. But features that require a complete re-write of your codebase are far from easy, and could be potentially disasterous...

Kinda. This 'lot' tends to want a lot of obscure features that only a few would use.nuffink wrote:Alternatively...

Yep! that dev needs a break - long over due
He certainly seems the - Disturbed - one to me – and a bit slow to realise he was in the wrong job
I think the star wars games are crap actually - bring on Unreal - or maybe the old greats like Doom, and later get puked on in Quake2 by the credits (if you make it)
Games are a different world to DSP I think
and in 90% of the cases have a differnt 'class' of developer (and customer) But dont quote me on that - I could be wrong
Best regards,
Spe3d
