Bought a push 2, now learning live. It's an interesting, yet un-intuitive daw that is worth learning since the results turn out different than what I'd get in other daws. Having an adaptive grid colors what I sequence in there.
In any case, there are a dozen things I'm trying to learn, some help would be appreciated on things that are way too convoluted on youtube videos. To start, I could use some help automating.
I want to automate a filter cutoff while tweaking live in 3rd party synth either on the gui or configured in abletons parameters. I can easily set up a lane and draw automation in, but I want to press record like I do in other daws and move around the cutoff on the synth or the configured in live and have it update in the lane for me. When I arm for automation, press automation record, the entire synth goes silent and I have to do re activate it again or press undo until I get sound out of it again, CRAZY!! And it doesn't record or capture shi*
Help, please.

You need both of those enabled:

So, how are you learning again? Because it's described right there in the User Manual and additionally there are countless resources on YT and specialised websites? The image above is the 2nd one suggested by googling "Ableton automation record"
So maybe start by learning how to learn?

I was trying to record automation in arrangment view but I would need to know how to for both ways.
I'm fuc*ing loving the session view. This is an awesome way to form ideas. All daws need an session view like this.
The Fx are amazing too, best I've heard in a daw.
Thanks for the manual. I'd have gotten to it eventually. I like getting wet without trunks first (bad habit). No thanks for snarkiness
Live is not easy to learn for me, frustrating, but fun. Seriously, I have to click a wrench to bring up the synth gui? Took a crazy amount of time trying to find this.
Anywho, at the library , time to get back to work

I recommend simply reading the manual, as it is very well-written.
https://www.ableton.com/en/manual/welcome-to-live/
(At the bottom there are links for PDFs)
Faster to learn Live-specific terms ("Scenes", "Rack", "Chain", etc.), and how stuff you already know works in Live.

just make sure you do everything with the Push as much as you can, avoiding the mouse unless you're sure there's no other way. what I've found is that the mouse and push workflows are quite different, and the controller will never feel as natural if you learn it later on.
look up how "session recording" works vs overdub in arrangement mode also, that's the potentially confusing part

Thanks guys, great advice, particularly acYm's. I'll hold off learning Live and focus on Push 2. I just finished reading the push 2 chapter in the the manual and watching all the learn push 2 videos on abletons site/youtube so I have a rough idea of what I need to do to get started.
There is one part I haven't read about or watched yet and that is automatically slicing a drumloop into a new drum track midi channel but already having its slices laid out like I'm able to do in live. So I'm slicing and automatically mapping it in a sequencer to recreate its original sound, not just creating an empty drum rack which has the slices. I do this for some loops so I can quantize the midi notes after its sliced to fix timing issues. Is this possible directly from push 2?

Why can't I load an audio file onto an audio track on push 2?
How can I load an audio file onto a clip in session view in push 2. In Live I simply drag a wave file but in push, it'll only let me load a wave onto a midi track? I'm sure I watched a video covering this, but the ones I'm watching now already have the files loaded. They don't start from scratch using the browser or add a new device/track-->device.

Got a bit of a showstopper here, well sort of. anyone ever hear about anything where Ableton Live increases CPU dramatically if using a 4K TV as a monitor. The default patch on hive is giving me 9 to 10% in live, which is twice as much another do AWS but when I connect an HDMI to a screen the CPU jumps to 60 70%

Looks like no GPU acceleration so the GUI is rendered by CPU and that's 8.3m pixels to push 60 times per second. Many people complain about this on beta forums, both on PCs and retina Macs.Touch The Universe wrote: Thu Jan 31, 2019 10:39 pm Got a bit of a showstopper here, well sort of. anyone ever hear about anything where Ableton Live increases CPU dramatically if using a 4K TV as a monitor. Try lowering the resolution pushed to the 4K TV in your display preferences.

That worked!!!
Thanks so much antic604
I take back what I said earlier. You can be as snarky as you want
But really, not impressed with the cpu in ableton at all 2-3 instances of dune and a hive and the rest audio loops/drum kits and I'm at 50-90% cpu. It's pitiful. At this rate I'll need to flatten and freeze everything. I've had 50-70 hive instances in other daws. My buffer is at maxium 2096 samples and 280ms latency (won't go any higher). Batter settings are fine. It's crazy...

Will see if freezing or flattening loops will help, thanks.
