If you don't like the way a thing sounds, that can't be argued. But statements of fact about its deficiencies have to be more than taste.
You can try to make it about filters, but when the historical weight is, eg., Minimoog has been such a go-to from the beginning, and the character of that supposed deficiency is a big part of that, your task is Sisyphean trying to make that little factoid overwhelm us all. "The sound of Massive" - there are a lot of differences to look at just in the factory presets, wide, wide differences: which one of these sounds does this even mean? It could be several different synths, the difference is so striking. It's fairly versatile.
I don't like a whole lot of stuff people love here. There's no upside to telling them their taste is suspect. You're just being a dick with that.

In fact in terms of overall sound quality Massive actually reminds me of Propellerheads Subtractor a synth that predates Massive by six whole years.
My mistake, it can be a fact that this is your impression.
This is argument from novelty, it literally shows only that you know from the basic dates of release for the two things.
Same quality of fallacy as argument from antiquity, or argument from tradition. "Chinese herbal cures are superior to modern medicine because they've done this for thousands of years now." "This sound is too dated now."

Do you have a low reading comprehension level? It is a fact that Massive reminds me of another old synthesiser. It may also be a fact that Massive doesn’t remind you of anything else. The fact is that is my subjective opinion on the matter.jancivil wrote: Thu Jan 31, 2019 4:36 pmThat's not how a fact works. That's at best supposition and in all likelihood only a statement of your limitations as a sound designer. Or simply you getting in your own way as to perception, stuck on bad premises. Your opinions based in your opinion.v1o wrote: Thu Jan 31, 2019 4:08 pmIn fact in terms of overall sound quality Massive actually reminds me of Propellerheads Subtractor a synth that predates Massive by six whole years. It obviously has more features than Subtactor but the sound quality is of a similar generation.

Any discussion on synthesisers is highly subjective. Yes you may be able to take objective measurements with a VST Analyzer but that doesn’t always measure up to the subjective quality. For example many people see the Virus as the holy grail of subtractive synthesisers but it has severely band limited oscillators and isn’t entirely free of aliasing either. Serum probably has the highest quality oscs, with its algorithms designed by a contracted professional mathematician. But to many people Serum sounds digital and lacking in warmth. Maybe I’ve been too harsh on Massive, it’s not entirely useless and is actually as a useful utility synth.jancivil wrote: Thu Jan 31, 2019 5:03 pm If you don't like the way a thing sounds, that can't be argued. If I’m taking minutes at a meeting you are attending, where everyone participating has to list their favourite synthesisers as part of a brainstorming session. And I accurately transcribe onto a notepad everything you said at this meeting. Will this transcript not count as a factual record of what was said at the meeting?

Of course it would. But their "feelings" about the synths are still subjective.v1o wrote: Thu Jan 31, 2019 6:26 pmIf I’m taking minutes at a meeting you are attending, where everyone participating has to list their favourite synthesisers as part of a brainstorming session. what someone says, and what is factual is not the same thing
if i said john lennon was a woman, would it be true because i said it?

yeah, facts can change.
subjective opinions seem to be grasped till death, even if faced with insurmountable evidence to the contrary.

I granted that I was mistaken to say you being reminded of the thing in Reason wasn't a fact. However let's be fair, you are talking about "the sound quality" - a subjective impression - "is of a similar generation", the verb is being what it is this looks as though a fact is stated. IE: The sound _is_ dated. Well, one's subjective impression of it can't be a fact.wagtunes wrote: Thu Jan 31, 2019 6:30 pmOf course it would. When I used it, it had the sound I wanted. Subjectively I would say it was rich and warm, while sharp enough to cut. I have zero interest in dating it. That is not a musical criteria.

Yeah, maybe you want to read what I wrote prior to your insult here. You're very invested in your assessment of your own assessment, isn't itv1o wrote: Thu Jan 31, 2019 5:51 pmDo you have a low reading comprehension level?
