Check out this interview:

Halfway down is a chapter "Tell us a little bit about your Prophet emulator, Repro." which I think is what captures the difference between the two.
Thanks. Very interesting and great interview for us sound design newbies

May I ask, what is "west coast" modules?

Did you mention that NI turned you down for a job and thus became u-he? :)
The best thing to ever happen for you? :)
Hee hee.

Probably answered already but is this deal to only be used as a kontakt instrument? Or is it sold as a regular U-he plugin inside logic?

Regular u-he plugins for any DAW.

Nice! thanks, I wasn't crazy about the idea of having it within a kontakt instrument.

surreal wrote: Tue Feb 05, 2019 12:56 pm Very nicely done!! Did you use the stock factory presets that came with this synth or did you roll your own?
Thanks, surreal. I used just two presets, HS Space Morning for Repro 5 and the bootup preset for Sonic Academy ANA 2. The remaining stuff is custom made. Long story short: Bass stuff = Repro. Mid/high stuff = ANA 2. Chiptune = Audiothing Minibit.

2cynikal wrote: Tue Feb 05, 2019 1:40 pm Is there any way of upgrading to the U-he Collection bundle as I own Colour Copy, Repro and Presswerk? I have asked Native Instruments and they referred me to ask the question to U-he! So, is there any upgrade path I can follow? :hyper:
Ha! Looks like the NI customer support guys have no insight into the particularities of our deal. As it stands, we have vowed not to do any special offers for these products *at all* in this time, which would include any way to get similar conditions for a part of the deal, and even for some time after the deal has finished. So I'm afraid there isn't anything we can do.

You can of course juggle things yourself with license transfers and stuff, but maybe sleep over it and figure out if you really need Satin, Twangström and Diva or if it's just the impulse of the sale.

Genius marketing but already have both instruments. Still interested in Zebra 3 though.

Apart from technical answers given, the West Coast approach to synthesis and music making has a lot to do with gamification. It's a lot about combining very simple modules to explore complex tonal results, which are often unpredicted. West Coast synthesis embraces randomness and "things that evolve".

While East Coast synthesis lives of the idea that a synthesizer is played by a musician like a traditional instrument, in West Coast synthesis one often does not distinguish between the synthesizer patch and the composition - the sound becomes the tune. Many West Coast performances are just one synthesizer droning and jamming about with little interaction by a musician.

To many people, West Coast synthesis is just bleeps and bongoes. But I have a different view, I think that West Coast synthesis is fun and playfulness in the first place. I'm on a mission to add some West Coast stuff into our existing product lineup, which was mostly conceived under the East Coast paradigm.

The first such incidence is the JAWs module in Repro-1 which is a wavefolder typically found in a Buchla or Serge modular system. It's also got a built-in loopable AR-envelope, often referred to as "function generator". Those are typical West Coast modules, they're simple and incredibly useful.

Simple answer:

East Coast - has a keyboard
West Coast - has no keyboard

:D
