Can anyone give me a potted summary of the advantages/disadvantages of doing so.

I think it’s more about Steinberg discontinuing support of the VST2 format more than anything else. Ableton was among the last of the DAW developers to hold out on adopting the VST3 platform for reasons that have never really been made plain. This is pure speculation on my part but, I’m thinking Steinberg wanted to (rightfully) get paid by DAW manufacturers for using VST3, and Ableton didn’t want to do it it any sooner than is absolutely necessary.” Should you go ahead and delete all of your VST2 in favor of 3? I’m not so sure about that but, in the near future, I’m thinking you won’t be seeing too many (if any) new plug-ins developed for the VST2 format, or older ones updated anymore.

I am wondering this myself.

The first thing I believe will be annoying is handling old sessions with VSt2 all over the place. Do the DAW recognizes VST3 versions of plugins used as VST2?

2. I will have to reinstall all my plugs because I never ticked the box for VST3. Maybe one of those times to start "over" and format computer, etc.

Do you have to switch? You can choose VST2 or VST3 in other DAWs if you have both installed.

One thing I have noticed with some plug-ins is there are no presets in the VST3 version.

I didn’t really answer that question the last time so, while I plan on installing the VST3 version for use in Live from now on, I’ll be sticking with the VST2 versions I have installed until they finally quit working. I see no upside to figuring out which VST2’s I can replace and then doing it

Nice. Alongside the recent additions to the SDK (native MIDI learn etc.) it seems like VST3 could finally take off.

Some companies still need to get with the programme though (eg NI)

I don't know why you think it's a matter of switching like it's either/or.

I use most instruments in VE Pro, which doesn't support VST3 instruments.
I assumed, before I starting using this, that Note Expression, which is a VST3.5 protocol, required VST3 instruments.
In Cubendo it does not. I noticed discussing MPE with a Bitwig user that Bitwig shows the same as Note Expression graphics, which probably means VST3 in that host, but whether or not the instrument has to there I didn't interrogate.

I don't know of any particular upside or downside to it with an instrument from actual experience. When there's an option in the installer, I select it but I have not actually used a VST3 instrument (except for Reaktor in Cubendo for 2 things I use AU in VE Pro).

The downside to VST3 FX here has been, with certain things when Write is activated, it will overwrite what you just did during playback while the VST2 version of the plugin doesn't behave this way, so in certain cases I choose VST2 unless I'm so loaded up I want Cubendo to turn the plugin off when no audio is passing thru it. Steinberg's local plugins are all VST3 now.

Same question occured to me when reading the Ableton mail about v10.1.

Googled a bit, didn't find a suitable answer, didn't care about it any longer. Because, if there's no big red sign somewhere on a wall in the interwebs, the difference must be neglectable (2ct).

As jancivil wrote, it's really not a either/or thing. For the plugins which offer a VST3 version, i use VST3, for the others, i use VST2. There's no disadvantage in using either, or mixing them.

Wait, I'm neglecting one very crucial point: VE Pro is an instrument, and includes a VST3 version (it's an instrument technically which hosts). VST2 instruments do_not support multiple MIDI Ports.
I only set it for 16 Ports but it goes to ... 48, in fact. I suppose audio outs potential is expanded for a multitimbral VST3 instrument.

So using Kontakt as a plugin, it's only VST2 so those Ports 2 thru 4 you see don't happen.

It was audio outputs that goes stupidly high. Up to 768 stereo. Kontakt will give you 64 total.

Will it be worth my while to switch to VST3 in Live 10.1?
