Why are a disproportionate number of plugin developers based in Sweden and Germany?

Why not Italy? Or Norway? Or France? Or Japan? Or the US?

maybe better economies to support such endeavours?

i know that ignite amps are italy-based

Is that really the case? Are there solid statistics somewhere?

Maybe it has something to do with Germany's long history of preeminence in classical music and/or the Berlin club scene, and the prominent role of Swedish producers in Anglophone pop music for the last few decades?...

Silly answer would be that the Mediterranean countries are warm enough to frolic outside, whereas the Nordic countries are too cold to play instruments. Germany/Sweden are just cold enough to keep people indoors, but not so cold their fingers freeze without gloves. (Kidding, sweet Germans....)

Because people in those countries know how to play real instruments.

I didn't know that. I learn something new every day.

Are there? Really? Do you have numbers for that or is it just a “feeling”?

My impression always was that there were a suspiciously big number of audio companies in Italy: IKM, Hornet, sknote, overloud... ;)
Who is there in Sweden? From the top of my head: softtube, propellerhead, sonic charge, audiorealism. Any more?

It is true that there are many plugin devs in these Nordic countries, but let's test if the number is 'disproportionate'. We can do this by comparing how many developers there are in the USA, for example. (We should also not forget eastern European countries - would be interesting to see how many there are in Estonia, Croatia etc).

I'll start the list:
Spectrasonics.
