What do you think is the best method for sharing music and for the best user experience? This includes listening on mobile devices (without the needs to install an extra app).

I have tried:
- Youtube (needs the most work, because you must edit & render a video)
- Soundcloud (easy to use but embedding is not working on all platforms)
- Hearthis (same as Soundcloud)
- Bandcamp (same as Soundcloud but more for releases and/or finished tracks)
- shared link to Dropbox (no embedding but this can use the Dropbox audio player)

It seems (but I can be wrong) that people don't click on an image if there is not a "play" button on it? So the best chance is to provide a Youtube video?

+1 for Soundcloud.

Yes, embedding of Youtube on Facebook is not working anymore. The only solution for Facebook is to use their own video features (it seems this was also the idea of Zuckerberg, to limit the usage of Youtube).
Soundcloud is IMO only used by musicians and as a sharing platform. It's not so unknown because its the biggest platform but yes, not many using it as a platform to listen to music.
Some of my friends (no musicians), saying that Soundcloud looks the most professional on their mobile devices/web compared to eg. "Hearthis".

Too much overlap with Soundcloud, bad experience with the GUI etc?

I'm glad FB no longer embeds YT vids, the viewer goes to the Youtube channel now.

I found out last week or something that a video of a certain higher resolution eventually results in the 'Opus' codec which is supposed to be better.
It seems so, but I'm not doing science with that. I'm pretty sure YT's codec normally sounds better than Soundcloud's (which I equate with Bandcamp's). I use Youtube, but I don't mind making videos, particularly now as my machine renders extremely fast.

I was getting a lot more listens at Choon at first but I think the 'at first' has worn off.

Many people claim that Youtube is a thing.

If you don't have much time or resources for self-promotion, better hit some popular label to do the promotion for you :). At the very least they prepare album art cover, often Youtube videos and social media bumps. Also they send promos to many people i the industry (trance DJs in my case) as well share it in dozens of stores you wouldn't even know otherwise.
