I use Kontakt as a standalone, driven by my own software. How can I use Ambience reverb with my setup? If impossible, what other good reverb programs could I use?

instead of using kontact as a standalone load it into a vst host that does basically the same thing but allows for effects to be added, like xlutop chainer (there's tons of hosts like this).

use a midi loopback device (tht alows you to create "internal" midi ports in your computer to send audio from one application to another). Then you can use chainer, plogue bidule, tobybear's minihost, audiomulch and so many others to host the plugin and add stuff to it.

Try have a look at Vaz2010.
It is a GREAT synth, sequenzer and vsti host.
It can host 16 synths or/and vsti´s with insert fx and send fx.
Well it really does everything you want with a good vsti, vst and dx effects host.

Thanks very much: quite easy to get Chainer to "host" the 2 programs.
The only problem I have found is that AllNotesOff (cc #7Bh) doesn't get through to Kontakt (essential for me). Is this a peculiarity of all these hosts?

Thanks Bram. How do I send audio between applications? (I have midiyoke but this only sends MIDI data doesn't it?)use a midi loopback device (tht alows you to create "internal" midi ports in your computer to send audio from one application to another).

you could use rewire, but I'm not sure I understand... you said you were using Kontakt as standalone. What is your goal, what kind of setup do you want?
You could also use Bidule as a VST plugin, I guess.
Do you want to use Kontakt as standalone, as a plugin or what? Do you want to use an additional sequencer (then why not just use Kontakt as a plugin in this sequencer?)

Sorry to be so dim but I think my backgound etc is a bit unorthodox. I started writing my sequencer on an Atari ST 10 years ago to drive Roland orchestral sound boxes to accompany me on my Clavinova, and later WX5. (Piano concertos, clarinet quintets etc for my own amusement - nothing commercial.) I know nothing about all these programs and am just beginning to get a hazy notion about VSTs, hosts, plugins, etc.
I have recently discovered the joys of software synthesis and my sequencing software (which I can modify as needed very easily) happily drives the very splendid standalone Kontakt via midiyoke. The problem with K is that effects have to be applied separately to each instrument, and with a full orchestra this is heavy on the old CPU. If I could run Kontakt's dry output through Ambience, there would only be one effects machine instead of 15 or 16.
Both K and A can be plugged into Chainer so this is a perfect solution except that Chainer filters out cc123 (AllNotesOff) which is essential for my software (stopping playing in mid-file for instance). Tobybear looks really cuddly but only loads one plugin and if I make Ambience standalone with it I don't know how to get the audio from Kontakt into it.
I am enjoying looking around at all the amazing software that is about, and I'm sure I shall sort myself out sooner or later. A guiding hand would nevertheless be appreciated.

ah, ok, now I get it.
easiest is just download Bidule.
Think of bidule as an old modular synth where you patch stuff together with wires.
set it up like this:
midi in => kontakt
kontakt => ambience
ambience => audio out
it might take you a while seting it up, but once you get how it works, it'll be a new world of infinite options.

Plogue bidule seems very impressive and does everything I need. However with midiyoke1 >> kontakt >> ambience >> m-audio 2496 (analogue) I get a latency of 232msec! (normally 8 msec). Changing the bidule internal buffer (only 256 bytes) makes no difference to this huge figure, nor does removing ambience. For live music this is obviously disastrous. What am I doing wrong?

Hey Stephen, I think you'd better ask on the bidule forums over at plogue.com... That said, you sure you're using ASIO drivers as input/output?

Dare I suggest EnergyXT. I use it mainly as a host but it is so much more if you need it.

Thanks again: I easily found the answer in the plogue forum:

I have downloaded EnergyXT but haven't tried it yet. Soon will though!If you wish to use ASIO, you need to look under Duplex in Audio Devices
