I believe Dan Electros were made of masonite, I sold them at the first music store I worked at in Boston...my first baritone was almost a DE but for some unknown reason since I was a kid I have always wanted a DE longhorn but never got that either

Ooops, really? And I've been a metalhead for 30 years.tapper mike wrote: Thu Feb 28, 2019 7:41 pm Dean's have never impressed me with tone or build. I'm not now nor ever will be a metalhead.
There was this guy Dimebag who used to play Dean guitars, you may have heard of him. If Deans were good enough for him...

It's a 'heavy guitar' - that's a whole sub-section of electric guitars, they are made for metel. That 'clean' sound that you consider 'high gain' comes from the humbuckers, which are designed to be aggressive and veeery 'metel'. Put an overdrive after the guitar, then go to the amp, in the fx loop put some chorus and fuzz, then crank everything to 11.SJ_Digriz wrote: Thu Feb 28, 2019 6:39 pmobviously you haven't followed those 2... your chances of getting a clean tone out of Rob are next to zero. His idea of clean starts at the bottom end of what I consider high gain. It's actually a kind of running gag on their channel.

I've probably mentioned this before but...SJ_Digriz wrote: Thu Feb 28, 2019 6:23 pm I envy people who have pinkies that are longer than my middle finger.
When I broke a couple of fingers a bit back (managing to fall up three small steps whilst completely sober...) In my head I was thinking, "you can't say that, you're a public servant and I'm paying your wages..

When I first started playing leads and discovering scales and licks I was always dissatisfied with my pinky. It was never strong enough. So I thought I'd invent a new thing where I'd just use two finger groupings and shift around the neck as quick as possible. It brought power to my playing. I was playing one day in a park and a guy comes up to me and said... Jango.
Had no idea what he was talking about but I felt shattered that someone else came up with the idea before me.
Yeah,,, This guy

For him it was out of necessity though as those two fingers were paralyzed.

Yeah, Django was the man. My dad listened to his stuff, so I was hip to him when I was very young.
To DT's claims of ever being sober I'm skeptical, but too the comment about sausage fingers.. I actually have fairly long skinny fingers. Not freak long like a lot of shredders. But, I have nothing to complain about really. Another guy my dad listened to was Andre Segovia... king of the sausage fingers, crushing another myth and excuse for why I suck at guitar. One day I'll find one other than lack of talent. So far no luck.

I actually rarely drink these days, but when I do I do it properly, like getting leathered on a Thursday afternoon with work the next day. Luckily I managed to abscond at lunchtime.

Sergovia was such a profound presence on the classical guitar scene that no one dared speak ill of him till 20 years after his death. I think it was Sharon Isbin who finally said... There were things Sergovia could have done better during performance.

The only "ill" thing I would say having listened to countless modern classical and flamenco players, is that he avoided what I would call unnecessary embellishment or flamboyance. He just played the songs. So from a "performance" perspective, you better not be hoping he's going to dance around in a thong, or even toss an extra trill or pull-off to emphasize a passage. He just sat down and played. I don't recall who wrote it, but one review long ago called him mechanical. To this day I'm not sure if it was an insult or compliment.

I have pretty average sized hands, but can span more than an octave pinky to thumb on the piano. Unfortunately thumbs aren't included in useful span for the guitar (unless you're Dave Mustaine)...SJ_Digriz wrote:I actually have fairly long skinny fingers. Not freak long like a lot of shredders. Actually it was about his squeaky tone.
