Albums that made you go WTF

I've long said that it was amazing how many bands were good in the 70s that sucked in the 80s.SJ_Digriz wrote: Fri Mar 01, 2019 10:15 pm It seems there is a common thread of the 80s being hard on bands musical direction.
Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.

Presence wasn't a great album, but I wouldn't call it WTF either. I think it's exactly what you get when the band that made Physical Grafitti tried to make a followup and couldn't really get their act together.Bombadil wrote: Sat Mar 02, 2019 7:07 am Zep, anything after Physical Grafitti, esp. Presence, I wasn't impressed with.
On the other hand I did like In Through The Out Door quite a bit.
I'd pick Tattoo You as the album they should have made their last. Its pretty sad how an album mostly filled with leftovers beats anything they have done in the past nearly 40 years.Stones shoulda packed it in after Some Girls. Their peak was from Beggars Banquet through Exile. After that, they were very uneven and meh.

They'd never get away with that title these days ...

I actually used to like Tales, but I haven't listened to it in ages.
Then 3 years later we get news that Yes is coming out with a new record. I was in North Dakota in the AF at the time and it was a country and top 40 only zone. It was depressing. Not only that Steve Howe, Carl Palmer and John Whetton (UK) were coming out with a record with Geoff Downes!!!! What could be better. Then the first Asia album crushed me with it's total Popness and complete lack of any resemblance to the awesome stuff those guys did before.
I liked the first one a bit. Half the songs were structured so that Palmer had a drum solo. Lots of good playing from Howe, even a few solos from Downes. It sounded like they were having a fair amount of fun on that one. Their later stuff seemed like they were trying too hard to have a bunch of pop hits.
90210 was a decent melodic hard rock album. What killed Yes for me was more of a slow slide. I wasn't crazy about the ABWH album and Union was just a mash of things that didn't work. A few years later I was in the car with a friend who was playing Keys to Ascension. New age drivel masquerading as prog.
Seemingly impossible 90125 was even worse than Asia

No, the blame falls squarely on Bernie Rhodes.Deep Purple wrote: Thu Feb 28, 2019 4:28 am
Cut the crap? I think they did exactly the opposite to the title of this album. Terrible way to go out, but probably a lot of it was to do with not having Mick Jones around and bringing in a bunch of session musicians and songwriters.

In Through The Out Door was a pretty good album. At least 2 tracks from that record are classics.mumpcake wrote: Sat Mar 02, 2019 9:07 pmPresence wasn't a great album, but I wouldn't call it WTF either. Ironically Yes - 90210 is one of my fav albums! Whatever they did before (and afterwards) leaves me stone cold.
Wtf: Rush - Presto.
Was there pressure from the record company to fulfill contractual obligations? Like, Here, presto, have that if you must.

No, thanks! Even Divine Intervention without Lombardo is a master piece in comparison. Slaaaaaaayer!

I still remember the first time I heard 'Reign in Blood' - that was 'WTF' in a good way. 'South of Heaven' is still me fave though.

But are any of those truly WTF things? I mean I've never been a Stones fan so it's hard for me to know. But, wasn't it just a matter of better songs on some albums than others. I don't recall them ever just not sounding like the stones. Same with Zep. They still had their basic sound and groove. It's just that the songs weren't as strong. But maybe since I'm not a fan I don't quite see the WTF.mumpcake wrote: Sat Mar 02, 2019 9:07 pmPresence wasn't a great album, but I wouldn't call it WTF either. To me, I kinda conflate 'wtf?' with 'jumped the shark,' and while they can be synonymous, are not necessarily. I've thought of posting a thread along the lines of 'at what album do you think your favourite bands/artists jumped the shark?'

ok, obviously that's a taste thing .. but play Going for the One, then play 90125. It might as well be a different band on a completely different radio station. Basically they were no longer on the station I want to listen to.BertKoor wrote: Sat Mar 02, 2019 10:48 pm Ironically Yes - 90210 is one of my fav albums! I actually saw them on that tour. They didn't play much from that album. I did like available light. But Rush lost me at Grace Under Pressure. I could feel it coming with Signals. I'm not sure the drift was severe enough for a WTF. But I don't really care too much for anything since then.Wtf: Rush - Presto.
