What Countries Do The Music In Your Music Collection Come From?

On top of page 1 of this thread, my math didn't add up. I think that when I was making that post I got distracted. I was going to stick with 60 percent British and 40 percent American but then I thought "In my music collection I have AC/DC, Midnight Oil, Bob Marley, Rush, etc, too." So I thought "About 10 percent of my music collection are from other countries, I better mention "Other" and assign 10 percent to that."

I remember being distracted while writing that post because I was peeling an orange and juice squirted into my eyes. The distraction must have caused me to forget to change the "40 percent American" to 30 percent.

Anyways, I decided to revisit that Wikipedia page to see if the info there somewhat reflects my estimates of what countries songwriters in my music collection comes from.

I mostly only have one song from most of these songwriters that belong in the "Other" percentage but in the case of the UK, I have multiple songs. Lots of Beatles songs. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Kinks, Sex Pistols, etc.

When I got to the FRANCE And GERMANY lists, I gave up on this post because I realised that the Wikipedia page is incomplete because:

For FRANCE, I have Daft Punk and Michel LeGrand and Vanessa Paradis, etc, in my music collection but they are not on the Wikipedia list. But since Jean-Michel Jarre is not really a songwriter then I guess that exclusion is justified.

For GERMANY, missing are songwriters for the band Trio. And no Peter Schilling either. What about the guys from Kraftwerk? And where is Nena Kerner? Falco? Nowhere in that list.

Oh well, that's it then. Adequate "typing practice" quota reached for today. I'm off to do something else. Okay, bye.

Not all recording artists are labelled as "song writer" on wikipedia, as you found out.

You can gather statistics 'till the cows come home, but it won't give you any insights.

I don't care very much about songwriters, tbh.

I don't have room for a music collection, anyway. On my entertainment content and backup HDD right now is some Mahavishnu Orchestra, a couple of live Zappa vids, a few Miles Davis and some things by Armenian pianist and composer Tigran Hamasyan.
When I had CDs most of them were Frank Zappa, with some Debussy, some Varèse, some Ligeti, some Ravel, some Stravinsky, some Boulez. When I did vinyl it was like that. Except when I was a young kid.
Was Stravinsky a Russian, a French, or an American composer? Was Varèse a French or an American composer?

How many of us would know this band if the lyrics were in German?

I particularly like Roopa Panesar, an Indian woman from Leicester who plays a mean sitar. Not sure if she qualifies as English or Indian!

I've got a fair amount from Iceland - Bjork, Samaris, Emiliana Torrini, Ólafur Arnalds, Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir/Of Monsters and Men etc - great music scene in Iceland (would love to go there one day)

I'm from New Zealand. We have tons of awesome acts who should have been bigger but never made it overseas, so they're not really known outside New Zealand... so yeah, New Zealanders listen to heaps of New Zealand music... but not a lot of other people do... with the exception of Crowded house.
The naked and Famous (actually, I think they're doing pretty well internationally) and Shihad are among my actual favorite bands.

Following on from my last post (and having said that), I listen to mostly Australian music... strangely. Right up there among my most favourite bands of all time are Icehouse, and a really small Australian indy band called Regurgitator... in-fact, I'd call Regurgitator the most influential band to me as a musician (listen to an album called "Art"). I'm also a huge fan of Australian Crawl, I saw them recently thanks to free tickets from work... and it was awesome!

Also, latelly I've been listening to a bit of Jack Parow... even though he's South African and I don't know what he's saying

Another band I'm a big fan of is Donkeyboy, from Norway.
