When you say "set" of spherical harmonics, is it like a coordinate system?

It's a series of allowed solutions. Like how when you take a square root, the answer can be positive or negative because both solutions satisfy "when I square it I get x". With spherical harmonics, some of the solutions will give orbitals corresponding to states with the same energy (e.g. p orbitals in x, y, z directions) but the overall series goes higher and higher in energy so you reach states that we never really see (because an electron with that much energy would just wander off somewhere else). Explaining the excitation levels in hydrogen (which can be easily seen/photographed by diffraction through a slit) played a huge role in the development of quantum mechanics.

Wow, you really seem to know your stuff!

Has me thinking of orbital states at close to absolute zero where the electrons all share the same electron orbital in its lowest state, and, how absolute zero isn't possible because of the quantum fluctuations in spacetime itself at the plank scale. How the creation and destruction of virtual particles out of the vacuum, prevent absolute zero. Interesting stuff.

My understanding is probably still off though.
