hi everybody,
as isad before i used to work with logic...

i always took the compressor get the bass pushed away
via sidechain compression....

i just cant find a way to do the same in sx :(

any suggestions?
thanx

db audioware has make a compressor with sidechain, that you can use with SX. That should do the job. Otherwise wait for VST 3 to come out.

:)

ehmm...
doesnt depend on the vst version,
worked in logic already (which is vst 2.1 i guess).......

but thnaks anyway

Yeh this is an issue with Cubase unfortunately. Hopefully one that will be addressed sooner rather than later, cuz it really limits the use of many great plugs. The only way around it is to use a compressor that has a seperate key input which can be initiated on the trigger track. BGTech dynamics, TC Native Bundle, db Audioware dynamics all have this facility.

yeah, i knew about the t.c. bundle but i would prefer some less cpu sucking plugin for that reason...
i'll try the other options you mentioned.

thanks

bad, bad steinberg :smack:

but i believe it will be changed one day and then i can
do :band: :violin:

Some time ago I tried to do sidechaining compressor on bass to bd via Waves c1 like that:
put mono bass & mono bd together on different channels in group channel;
put C1 with sidechain on it and triggering key option which uses one channel to control the compression of the other.
Thats it.
Is it what you meant?

......hhhmmmmm......kindof......
but thats just a workaround.

all i want is a send in one channel and a sidechain input for every plugin that support that option.

just like in logic, pro tools, etc.(which i hate btw)

regards

Some nice suggestions in this thread! I've set to work using the TC native compressor but am having trouble getting the sidechain to really work.. (i'm a noob at this kinda stuff..). Anybody had experience with this baby?

I recommend trying out Slim Slow Slider's VST sidechain compressor (freeware)...it's really sweet! Mono & Stereo flavours, too.

To use this compressor with Cubase SX2, you'll need to create a group channel and insert the appropriate version of the sidechain compressor (use the mono version on a stereo group, and the stereo version on a quad group). Then figure out which track will 'duck' what. The following example will use a kick drum track to duck a bass line track, using the mono version of the above sidechain compressor inserted on a stereo group channel:

Set up your kick and bass line tracks and pan the kick hard right and route it to the group with the sidechain compressor insert, then pan the bass line hard left and route it to the same group. The kick (which has become the 'key input') should now be ducking and riding the bass line according to the compressor settings applied to the plug-in. The 'key volume' setting controls how much of the key input (in this case, the kick) is mixed with the bass line.

An alternative setup would be to use a [pre-fader] track send from the key input channel to the group instead of routing the output, thus retaining fader control in the Cubase mixer of the kick drum in the mix (be sure that the sidechain comp's key volume is set to -oodB in this scenario).

To use the stereo version of the plug-in, a quad group is required, where the key input is panned to the Ls/Rs channels before entering the group, while the effected channel (the bass line, in our example) is panned to the L/R channels. The stereo version of the Slim Slow Slider sidechain compressor has four inputs - 1&2 (the signal, or effected, input) correspond to the Cubase quad group L&R, and 3&4 (the key input) correspond to the quad group Ls&Rs in this setup.

But before you get carried away, best to read this post [from the Cubase.net forums - scroll down the one dated 'August 10, 2004'] first. In summary, when sending stereo tracks to quad groups always make sure that 'Y-mirror mode' is selected in the 'Mo./St' parameter box within the SurroundPan setup for the sent track (double click the track's pan box in the mixer to open the SurroundPan window). Although the manual states otherwise, Cubase defaults this parameter to 'Mono Mix' instead of 'Y-mirror mode', so a manual change is necessary. Also make sure to set the grey panning balls in the SurroundPan window to 100% left and right. These changes will ensure that the stereo imaging for the track is retained when sent to the quad group.

Happy sidechaining!
