OP, I think if it were me, and I was starting out, I would take advantage of one of those player packs and see how things go. It's not a huge investment, you get everything you need, and the instrument and more than good enough to get your started. And who knows, if you decide it's something you really get into, you can always use the old begginer guitar to experiment on -- as you get more into the instrument you will most probably want to get into neck/bridge adjustment and pickup replacing and so on.. you can use the old beginner guitar as a sort of development test environment before you do real work on a better instrument.
