Hi,

I have a choice to buy (2nd hand) Cubase Elements 10 or Cubase Artist 6.5 (for home recording).

Many people seem to like version 6.5 because its fast, lite and does the job well. and most people seem to like the layout of 6.5.

Would you recommend I get the version "6.5 ARTIST" or do you think I should get "10 ELEMENTS" ?

I would prefer to have 10 Artist, (but its above my budget).

so my choice is 6.5 ARTIST or 10 ELEMENTS.

Are there loads more effects/plug-ins and features on 10 Elements that are worth the problems of 'high CPU usage' and other problems ?

I really would love to know the opinions from experienced users.
I dont want to spend weeks and weeks learning how to use over-complicated software.
I am computer savvy, but also I dont want to waste unnecessary time.

or, do you think there is a more suitable version of Cubase that I should search for online ?

Thank you VERY MUCH for any help that you can give me ;)

I used Elements 7 and 8, then went to Pro 8, 8.5, 9.0 and 9.5.

Mostly gui is improved a lot as over these versions - I would go for Elements 10 just for that one thing.

And you don't need the dongle for Elements.

I think the GUI is improved in some ways, and there are things I don't like in 10. I can work around them. It's a little more childlike to put it simply.
(I like to show the markers in the toolbar, and now there's 8 to click on rather than 10, and the look of it is no improvement either.)

I think probably Cubase performs better lately. I never found Cubase difficult to use but some evidently do. Disclaimer, I know nothing from the cut-down versions.

Actually, there's a third option. :) You could get Artist 6.5 now, and then upgrade it to the current version later: https://www.steinberg.net/de/shop/buy_p ... st-10.html

An issue could be lack of support for some newer plugin versions. Although that's unlikely.

From memory, the biggest rectritions in Elements was lack of sidechaining support (there is no way you can accomplish sidechaining, to my knowledge). I also remember, due to routing constraints, i wasn't able to recored a VSTi's output, but, i'm not sure about that now. Artist has quite a lot of things Elements hasn't, here's a comparison table: https://new.steinberg.net/de/cubase/compare-editions/

That's a big jump to go from elements to Pro.
I would never need the Pro version, But I would love to have Artist.
Artist seems much nearer to Pro; than elements is to Artist, (in terms of plug-ins and stuff).

Elements is THREE TIMES CHEAPER than Artist. so I can imagine how bare it must be.

I am a home user. (windows 7)
Recording: Audio, Guitar, Keyboard.
Wanting my recordings to sound decent, etc.

Question:
Now you can look back at Elements 8; what are the main things that it didn't have that you think it needs (in comparison to Pro) ?

Thanks again ;)

Thanks for the 'upgrade' idea.

Curious: What versions have you used in the past and what are you on now ?

ps: if you are familiar with Artist 7, 8, 9: Do you think if I can find a decently priced (2nd hand) Artist 7 or 8, is it a leaps and bounds better than getting Artist 6.5 or Elements 10 ?

eg: i'm assuming that Artist 8 should be much more useful than Elements 10 ?

Thanks ;)

I wouldn't go for any Elements version, it's way too limited.

Things in Artist not in Elements at that time:
track lanes - meaning all takes like in a loop are stacked virtually on top of each other.

You have to create a bunch of empty tracks, and then drag takes onto those tracks to even handle them.

In Artist you just expand lanes and they are there for you.

So thought about that for a while to get Artist.

The looking further to get something that resembles track templates - track archives in Cubase Pro - this were scoring points towards Pro.

Then VCA Faders - thinking in future would be swell when projects grow larger.

Then really good notation integrated - was scoring points too.

Every fall there is 35-40% discounts on upgrades - so went for Pro at v8.0.

Cubase 6 still happens to be my personal favorite version of Cubase.
