I guess my vote goes to reaper at $60. Though I fail to see the logic in spending $1000 to $2000 on hardware but skimping as much and humanly possible on the actual software and tools that you will need to make the music with.

I think OP, it's also good to look at it as a personal investment of time and effort in learning the tool and what you want to get out of it. i.e. you may or may not spend 10 or 100 hours learning to use Cakewalk and then switching to another DAW because you want to just for the heck of it or because you need to because you want to get into a certain type of workflow or ecosystem.

If might be better to look at it as, decide what is the type of music that you want to make with tool, and then chose the tool that is best for the task. i.e. if you want to make cinematic orchestral music with vienne librarires, you probably ma not want to go with ableton or bitwig which is meant for more EDM type stuff -- though I guess you could if you really want to.

I'll add my 2 cents.

I've used a bunch over the years. Starting with Cakewalk (before SONAR), then SONAR, Vegas Audio and ACID Pro, Digital Performer, and then Pro Tools for a long while.

I also went from Windows to Mac OS X and back to Windows and recently evaluated a few of the current packages. Pro Tools, Cubase, Studio One, Ableton, and REAPER.

I felt Studio One was the best of the lot and Studio One Prime cost me nothing.

Do you mean the seller of such license? Buy getting it through a hardware purchase of certain midi controllers or audio interfaces. And these are legit.
Yes, they are legit, but its the ones on Ebay that puzzle me.

They are selling licenses that connect to Steinberg servers and authorize ok,so they also seem to be legit. I see that the German music magazine "Keys" was giving away Cubase LE 9 so maybe they got them through there.
I bought cubase 10 le off ebay and it saw something about Audient ID when I was registering or installing it so my copy may be a copy that came with Audient ID.
