Engaging vocalists vs STFU

Some vocalists I could listen to them singing the phone book, and others I can't switch off soon enough, however popular they may be.

For example, a lot of Shirley Manson's songs are about how fzcked up she is. And yet I listen...

On the other hand, I am pretty sick of Pink. The first thing I think of when I hear her voice is my wife screaming at our kids.

So who could you listen to anything by, and who do you wish would just STFU?

Tom Waits.

I think he could literally read a phone book and it would be entertaining.

I think Björk is remarkable.

There is a swedish singer Laleh which also has some really special about her ways.

Experimental Imogene Heap is also exciting.

I don't go much on male voices, but I could listen to Don Henley (Eagles) all day. I could probably listen to Boys of Summer for at least half a day.

As for female singers, there are far too many to count.

Yeah most Male singers don't make that much of an impression on me either. The singers I love or hate (based on how they sing) tend to be female .

I'm the opposite, I find female singers fall into a few categories but their voices are largely unremarkable and they lack the aggression I look for in a good vocal. So I would definitely take Pink over Shirley Manson, she has a real attitude that many female vocalists lack.

But the vocalist I could listen to all day is Clint Ruin, not just for his voice but equally for his lyrics. I also really like Douglas McCarthy's voice (Nitzer Ebb). I'm not a Metallica fan but I really like James Hetfield's voice, too. I'm also a big fan of Till Lindemann from Rammstein.

Engaging? I don't know if it's the voice that is engaging or if it is the catchiness (to me at least) of the song, or both.

When I first heard a song that our neighbor was playing really loud out of his/her stereo speakers from his/her backyard, I thought "I like her voice and I love her song". It turned out she is a he. I didn't care. I went to the library and borrowed pretty much all his CDs. I eventually bought his 2-CD greatest hits compilation named Decade at the CD store that sold them second-hand. The song that the neigbor was playing... is this song:

Another voice that I loved (but hated in the end) is Stevie Nicks's. Her three songs, (Rhiannon, Landslide, Dreams) was done when she was about 27 years old (she was that old/young when she joined Fleetwood Mac). I guess she was not snorting cocaine that much when she sang those three songs. Eventually, snorting cocaine too much caused a hole to develop in her nose which then caused her to sound even more like a sheep. Baaa. Or is that just her style of singing? Sort of like Barry Gibb?. Anyways, here she is being a diva, possibly being like Barry Gibb, demanding more drugs. I liked her speaking voice too.

And here she is, singing country melodies and lyrics?, with Christine McVie doing a great job on keyboard(s).

And here is Jimmy Fallon doing Barry Gibb. Not sexually.

Love Martina Topley-Bird's singing with Tricky, has the odd trick of sounding both warm and glacial, never seems to need the histrionic gesture-singing so beloved of post-Whitney/Mariah pop and rnb.

I heard Pink do a version of "A Million Dreams" from The Greatest Showman on the radio the other day. It only sounded like she had one dream... to get the hell out of there and cash her check.
