I've tried Surge several times over the years including when it became open source and it's not the most pleasant interface I've ever used especially at modern resolutions.

I just opened Surge again and yes that's not something I would want someone who is brand new to synthesis to face. :o

They'd probably get brain lock and take up painting or dance........ :hihi:

Surge's GUI is functional here but not comfortable at all. With so many other synths in my folder there just isn't enough room for synths like Surge.....

Isn't the osc filter routing switch ( green buttons ) broke ?
When set to left (remember green switch ) , means filter 1 only , and set filter 1 to low pass , and filter 2 to highpass .
It shouldn't high pass filter the osc ,even when the filter balance slider is set to filter 2 .

Yet , it does

Solved , ofcourse filter routing has to be set to dual mode ,
But damn , these dc ofset clicks happen all the time

FWIW, I've worked with just about every synth imaginable but when I downloaded and started trying to program Surge, I almost reached a point where I was going to look for a manual. Fortunately, I finally got it all down but not without a ton of effort. I would never in a million years recommend this synth to beginners unless all they wanted to do was pull up presets.

This synth is a UI train wreck.

well, its not for everyone. the gui is not the friendliest, but
it seems like everytime i fire it up, im off into another
long session of patch programming with it. i just made
the basics, a pad, lead, keys, guitar/pluck and
spin off of those. as those are the sounds im using it for.
viva SURGE!
oh and the vox2 wt set is 1/2 done

I was blown away by surge when it discovered it around 2008 , but for some reason I didn't buy it ..
I remember it took me ages to find out how to modulate the speed of an lfo with another source .
Not much later claes added the downward pointing arrows on each lfo :tu:

With all that being said , I still think it was possible to modulate an lfo's speed by either the filter /amp env , but it doesn't work over here .
By clicking on the amp mod source ( so it blinks ) and then on one the lfo's arrows , we should be able to modulate that destination .

Imo, the Surge UI does have a strong point, but it's not that it's easy for beginners to learn. I think it's strong point is that once you have actually learned it's interface, then suddenly everything is there in front of you.
You don't have to switch tabs to see if that filter is already being modulated by something already, you can just sit and look at it, and immediately start building your sound, without having to memorise what's happening in the filter section or whatever.

I have immense respect for this synth, because the fact that it allows you to perform tasks so fast, means that i would generally go a lot further in perfecting my presets, because it didn't take as long.

Well now i've moved over to Zebra for most tasks, but when i do go through my Surge presets, i'm still quite amazed at the sounds i got out of this dull looking synth.

Btw, this synth excels at creating hi-tech and scifi sound effects, because it's so fast and easy to try different combinations of modulations on the wavetable's sliders. I still love Surge for this

The MPE implementation seems totally broken...

I’ll go over it in detail later, but the two things that frustrated me the most were it’s response to velocity from my Rise 49 (not any trouble with other plugins like Synthmaster). It took way too much velocity to get a note to play. The other issue was the way the pitch bend range seemed to be controlling what pitch was being played.

Occasionally clicks are heard and also the sound disappears. It happens a few times. Without doing anything. Then peaks of about 14 dB appear. Most of the time it works well. It is solved by reloading the project or reinserting Surge. Surge is for me an important instrument in my current projects. Reaper, VST 2, Windows 7 64Bits. Thank you very much for this great job  .

Thank you esaruoho for making this usable again! I still love the sound of Surge after all these years. the UI is quirky but the sound still holds up, even after 10 years.

I did encounter a bug and wanted to let you know about it. I'm on windows 10, Reaper x64, latest 5.xx VST2. With the patch Big5 from Bronto Scorpio ( https://www.audiobombs.com/users/BrontoScorpio ) I'm getting huge volume spikes of more than +17dB on note-on and note-release during the echo tail.
Feel free to call me Brian.

is it possible to have installed the new version alongside the original?

Same issue, i believe it's been reported a couple times. i have to delete and re-insert Surge about fifteen times to make it stop doing this. Same behavior in Logic and Live 10 on a Mac, 64 bit. Behavior is usually immediately noticeable, sometimes loud popping on one channel and normal default patch can be heard on the other channel (it swaps channels) and sometimes just a mono pop with no default patch audible...though on Logic it occurred after a couple of minutes of playing.
