Hey folks

I been getting into the more live performance aspects of music lately, i bought CD decks which i love, getting DJ software and dabbled with Ableton Live demos, EnergyXT performance tools etc.

So are there any other good option? I have FLStudio and that has synced loop/pattern triggering but its pretty fundamental.

Are there other good live performance/sequencing tools except Ableton Live? I am looking to invest, and although live is the obvious choice, i wonder what else is out there.

Cheers in advance :)

I've seen DJs use nothing but Audiomulch.

If you just have a bunch of .wav files, really easy to set it all up with triggering looping. No timestretch in Mulch, but I would think you'd only want to use that before going live, so that you don't tax your CPU.

If you go to this page, you can see a video of Manitoba doing a set with Mulch.

Cheers,
Steve

I really can't say enough about Live, quincy. I just got the full version last week and am amazed. This is after trying out a lot of different hosts (like tracktion as you know) and not really knowing what I'm after. As you go deeper into live the possibilities are endless. Together with midi implementation it's excellent. Although I don't plan to use it for performance right away, I can see from improvising with clips how quickly you can build up really complex loops in real time. I think this really takes some of the lockstep out of what I've seen in so many other hosts and frees you up to play the host as an instrument, coming up with unexpected things that work together. Anyway, my 2 c.
I cannot play an instrument. I cannot remember melodies. I cannot sing. I have bad timing. I know way too little about counterpoint.

Thanks for the advice. I'm 99% sold on it just wanted to check around for options before dishing out a serious wedge on software.

I saw this thing called Yowstar G, and it seemed similar to live in some ways, but also sadly seems to have had no development or news since release. Ghost town forum. Not a good sign.

Any other suggestions anyone?

I've managed to set up EnergyXT to do some Live-style triggering (using Trollo) and be able to play me midi keyboard as well :D However, compared to Live...

I'd say Live without any hesitation.

If you don't mind a slight hijack here's a little tip I've not seen posted anywhere...

When you hit the midi map button you get a few more options appear.
The interesting ones are "Scene select" (Master track ander the clips far right) and "Track launch" (all tracks under clips).
Assign "Scene select" to your mod wheel and "Track launch" to any midi key.
The clip at the intersection of your chosen row and column will be launched.
With very little practice launching clips is very fast and natural and it saves the tedium of assigning each clip to a key.

Ableton have obviously thought about this so I'm sure it's known but, as I say, I've never seen it spelled out.

As always, don't forget about the academic discount. You're still in school right?
