What you're using currently?telecode wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2019 10:41 amI am on the market for an upgraded DAW and was seriously looking at Reason, but am waiting now to see how it pans out because I am in the same situation. I don't need a DAW that works well only with the included VST's by the vendor (regardless of how great they may), I need one that works with all the VST's I invested in.
Because it makes sense to use multiple DAWs (or any tools, for that matter) if they complement each other or are at least sufficiently different, so that they provide different inspiration. For example there's not much sense in adding Studio One or Logic to Cubase, or Bitwig to Ableton Live.

Well, I am on Cubase. Deciding to jump to something more advanced that will give me 100+ tracks if needed. But am following the various discussions on NI and Reason forums about the issues with mixing different VST's in the DAW. Theoretically, I should be fine because I don't really use a lot of really obscure stuff. Mostly Ni, Arturia and XFer and Steinberg products.antic604 wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2019 11:13 amWhat you're using currently?telecode wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2019 10:41 amI am on the market for an upgraded DAW and was seriously looking at Reason, but am waiting now to see how it pans out because I am in the same situation. Weird, because AFAIK there's no better DAW for large sessions than Cubase and even if there was, it's definitely not Reason. Lack of folder tracks, separate sequencer tracks for every insert you want to automate, inability to hide and freely resize tracks, cumbersome process of freezing VSTs are a great no-no for this type of jobs. I can't even imagine how Rack or Mixer would look for 100+ tracks projecttelecode wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2019 11:29 amI am on Cubase. For small to medium projects Reason is a blast and is actually the most inspiring environment to kick-off the idea, but for big projects / templates I'd rather stay in Cubase (or perhaps Reaper, Logic or S1, but not sure if they're better than Cubase).

I see. So what are your thoughts on FL Studio for large tracks?antic604 wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2019 11:57 amWeird, because AFAIK there's no better DAW for large sessions than Cubase and even if there was, it's definitely not Reason. (Not that I am seriously considering it, but my kid uses it and I watch all the youtube posts of the chillstep artsts that use it and they seem to have lots of tracks. I could also get free tech support at home in I buy into that ecosystem

That video depresses me a little bit. Kudos for them trying to reach out to a casual hobbyist market, but if you ask me, it's the wrong approach for that particular software. I think Reason should be marketed as the weird modular thing it is and try to compete more with Ableton Live (or Bitwig). I'm not sure people in that market like to have the feeling they are casual hobbyists, even if they are. Ableton's promo material fares better in combining accessibility and professionalism. But I'm definetly not a marketing person and might be totally wrong, just my 2 cents here.

Well, if Reason is indeed weird and modular, then I am still totally interested and game for getting into the ecosystme. The promo videos made it look like they are targeting the casual Akai MPC pop/hip-hop/EDM market.dukeitch wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2019 12:08 pm That video depresses me a little bit. It's apparently a great DAW, but I could never warm up to it, even though I really tried 2-3 times - it just seems messy & cluttered to me. But I know people who are really familiar wouldn't change it for anything else, because of speedy workflow. It's supposedly very efficient too, so high track count shouldn't be a problem.telecode wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2019 12:02 pmI see. So what are your thoughts on FL Studio for large tracks?

It CAN be weird & modular, e.g. last night I made a "track" that played for 20 minutes with NOTHING in the sequencer. I was just using LFOs and sequencer devices to generate notes, chords, harmonies, drums, etc. You can't do that in Cubase, or Logic, or Studio One.telecode wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2019 12:55 pmWell, if Reason is indeed weird and modular, then I am still totally interested and game for getting into the ecosystme. But it also works great as a normal, linear DAW like the ones I mentioned above. You don't have to ever flick the rack around and patch cables. You don't need to use LFOs and sequencer devices.
It's a super flexible DAW for medium-sized projects (IMO), with a slightly outdated workflow that they're slowly turning around, e.g. the 10.2 version added some things that community was asking for for years (if not decades), like multi-track editing, returning playhead, adaptive grid, 'ganged' faders and other quality-of-life things. As I said in the opening post, they seem to listen to users (even more) recently.
And regarding hip-hop/EDM crowd - if you go to Reason's FB group, 70% is hip-hop/trap, 20% EDM and only remaining 10% something else, so your comment might be on the money there

Reaper being prevalent to hip-hop bedroom home producers makes total sense given it's lost cost of entry.antic604 wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2019 1:09 pm And regarding hip-hop/EDM crowd - if you go to Reason's FB group, 70% is hip-hop/trap, 20% EDM and only remaining 10% something else, so your comment might be on the money there![]()

I love this as well. For most of the songs I make for my experimental glitch project, the sequencer is completely empty.antic604 wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2019 1:09 pm It CAN be weird & modular, e.g. last night I made a "track" that played for 20 minutes with NOTHING in the sequencer. Oh, so you're the guy from Matthias' story about QNG, who was building the patch in the morning and then it was playing throughout the rest of the day in the office?supersplaron wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2019 1:22 pmI love this as well.
