In 1985 I probably still had my Commodore 64 hooked up to a black and white TV (with a very rounded tube and ugly harvest yellow plastic case).whyterabbyt wrote: Sat Mar 30, 2019 1:56 pm bollocks. a second tv for the kids might have been black and white, but not the main one. by 1985 kids had pretty much already started having colour home computers as a matter of course.
A couple of years before that, we played Atari 2600 on that same black and white TV.
And a few years before that, I watched "The Wizard of Oz" on it and was disappointed that it didn't go color when they got to Oz.
There wasn't a "second TV for the kids" so much as "the old Zenith from before I was born still worked for several years after Dad sprung for a color TV."
But yeah, I remember Live Aid.

I only got to watch little bits off and on. I think my dad was watching football or something. All that mattered to me was that I got to see Duran Duran... I was a huge fan. Even if he did mess up that one bit, it was a real thrill for me to see them perform. I’ve seen them live a couple of times since then, and it never gets old. I can’t recall which other parts of Live Aid I watched that weekend, but I’ve seen most of it on YouTube since then.Aliens wrote: Sun Mar 31, 2019 1:10 am Duran Duran - View to a kill (I think) - Le Bon's hilarious squawked note.

I remember at my school it wasn't the done thing for males to admit to liking Duran Durandeastman wrote: Sun Mar 31, 2019 1:50 amI only got to watch little bits off and on. It's so very easy to hit a wrong note or chord whilst performing live in a band which can be for so many reasons, and it's actually why rehearsing as much as possible is so important, but it still happens even to the best of artists. I remember it happening to myself whilst playing the keyboard on stage with over 200 people watching. The more complex the song the greater chance of it happening, but really it's more to do with how you recover and knowing when to rejoin. If you screw up, just stop, take one or two deep breaths and rejoin from the chord pattern the Bass player is following and from there you should be able to follow the chord sheet...It's easier said than done, but then that's why you practice a lot.
One thing to note about why people still used black and white TV's was that the TV license was far far cheaper than a colour one. For many years I had a 14" black and white portable for my Atari 800 XL.. but I did get to have a bigger 21" colour TV for it around 1987 time. The life span for these TV's were not long from my experience of having them.

It got a lot of promotion, I saw the line-up and couldn't see anyone I wanted to watch so, no, I don't remember watching Live Aid because I didn't. It's strange because the two organisers were in bands that I had loved - The Boomtown Rats and Ultravox, but by 1985 I had no interest in seeing either as they had gone soft years earlier.
I do remember seeing Urgh! A Music War at the cinema, though. It introduced me to some of my favourite bands - Wall of Voodoo, Spizzenergi and Oingo Boingo, to name just a few.
