Are there plans to update the UI?

Post

Thanks man. I guess I’ll be checking it out. A free, fully featured synth with MPE, is pretty cool considering how few synths support it in the first place.

How many people are actively contributing to the code? The problem with open source apps is that the contributors eventually lose interest and the updates stop. If I knew how to code I’d definitely help out in many open source projects.

Seems to be 5 active contributors to the github repo (in no special order): baconpaul, itsmedavep, esaruoho, jsakkine, kzantow.

Many thanks to all the contributors (baconpaul, itsmedavep, esaruoho, jsakkine & kzantow) for their generosity. Also to all others who are supporting this "Open Source". Surge is awesome. One of the best I've used. "Open Source" means sharing. And sharing is one of the best qualities that a human being can have.

Thank you!

We should also thank @kurasu who chose to open source the synth rather than abandon it!

In version 1.6 the only plan to update the UI is to make it zoomable and use vector assets. Zoomable with bitmap assets is in place with beta 7 and we have a branch with vector assets in development. The UI and code are rather tightly coupled making a reskin exercise a pretty big bit of surgery so we wanted a stable release of the current synth first.

When that’s done, brave developers may do a new UI with brave designers. But nothing rises to the level of “plan” yet.

That said: if you want a new UI and can code C++ cross platform, I’m more than happy to share my notes on how I would make it skinnable with you (or anyone). Plan to write them up in an issue soon enough.

Just an FYI folks: The "big click and pop" you've all been reporting I think I fixed. There was a filter which was initialized with random memory in some situations.

The nightly build at https://surge-synthesizer.github.io/#downloads has my fix now. We'll probably make it a beta 8 soon enough since this is a bug lots of people ran into.

baconpaul wrote: Sun Mar 31, 2019 1:15 am Can you share what setup you are using? The VST3 has a variety of incompletenesses. I did briefly test MPE with mac bitwig vsts but not extensively.
MPE in Bitwig on Sierra is fine for VST2, VST3 doesn‘t do the pitch bends correctly. Bitwig translates pitchbend into expression. As long a VST3 implementation takes care of expression, the host will take care of Midi. I guess this is also true for Cubase. But beside the Steinberg instruments I didn‘t find much VST3 implementations which are complete, most are just wrapped VST2s...
So in beta 7 I coded non-MPE pitch bend and (I thought) did it correctly. I just tested it and it does work. MPE is very different (obviously).

VST3 is weird. All midi controllers have to map to a parameter. Surge doesn't work that way but in the VST3 I made "ghost parameters" which the midi controllers map to and then I unpick in the plugin wrapper to re-create the MIDI. I think I got all the non MPE events but if you see differently would love to know.

I'll try my Roli with VST3 one day soon enough. Looking at the code I could see it might not work indeed.

Kind of a 90s computer music vibe to the sound, not really my cup of tea, but good luck with the project.
