If keeping things in the musical realm, Soundforge and Spectralayers. The sale bundle they came in was way too tempting to pass up, especially since I used to do a lot of editing with Adobe Audition (I loved working with the spectral editor, great tool for learning audio).

Outside of music, I do a lot of writing. My application of choice is Scrivener. If anyone has complex text projects to work on, I highly recommend it. You do have to do formatting for final print in something like Microsoft Word, but Scrivener is amazing during the organizational and creative stages.

Though it is not appropriate to start a discussion about this right now, let me ask you one question: What kind of skill did you ever injected to a community like KVR (or other) to help, inform and enable people to learn things they want to achieve, or just provide tools that work, instead of just spitting somewhat smart ass comments only?
See, i probably would have another opinion about him, if he wouldn't have so smartass-ish-ly made his opinion appear as a fact in some discussions about computational things, and operating systems. I'm not exactly a friend of the motto "Don't question him, he's a genius" either. From my point of view, he could have built the Eiffel Tower, and still talk BS.

There's no reason to get personal, by the way , even when you feel the need to defend your Berlinian buddy. I think he can well speak for himself. If he wants to.

It's okay to criticize the phrase "Don't question him...". It wasn't too smart from my side, so to speak. Actually it was kind of stupid. A reflex, without further thoughts.

Composer's Desktop Project with the Soundshaper front-end is probably my most used software for sound transformation. Used and loved it for well over a decade. FScape and Mammut get a look-in there too when I want to do very specific things to audio or certain 'party trick' processes.

In the (kind of) non-audio world, I use the free version of TouchDesigner for 3D and graphics. It's a Max/Reaktor-like environment that makes it surprisingly easy to get audio-reactive 3D and/or video processing going. Lots of fun and only a little knowledge goes a surprisingly long way.

Other than making music in the DAW, I don't do anything creative. I'm terrible at graphics, web design, visual design etc.

I'd love to be able to create my own covers and thumbnails for songs, but I feel it would take me years to go beyond the level of what a 6-year old could do in MS Paint.
Take a single oscillator, producing a drone. Send it to the wave shaper, altering the tone.
This can be a triangle, Sawtooth or a square. Modulate the pulse width, nobody will care

I can’t begin to list it all. My day job is in 3D animation, vfx, and motion graphics, so I have just as many of those tools and plugins as I do music software. On top of that, add software development in various languages, 3D printing, and on and on.
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

Oh, that's a rather rare (and expensive) one. I have it on my machine because some of my students use it. Most obnoxious licensing system ever. :)
It's actually pretty good these days.
The free version gives you all the tools, you can save in a special format and learn and render with a watermark in small resolution.
I mostly use the "Indie" version that is 200$ a year, can be used if your net income is below 100.000, it has all the tools of the big version, you can install on two machines, get three network render clients/Houdini Engine licenses and can render up to 4k. Pretty amazing value, thanks to them wanting a pathway into the games market.
But yeah, their full commercial licensing is rather something from the last century... For big studios it's probably okay though.

I think it will catch on in more areas in the future, last year I taught a generative design workshop at the UCL in London for architects in "computational design" and there isn't anything else out there to compete with Houdini in that area ATM.

We have Houdini floating licenses on our license server. I don’t see it as any more difficult than our floating Maya licenses or floating Vray licenses or anything else.
