I love that show! I saw a few in Britain, but was ecstatic when I found out I could watch every show from both seasons here in the US.

I did get to see him live - In the mid 90s I was at the Glastonbury Festival, and friends took me to see his act after dropping some acid! Holy crap that was one of the funniest experiences of my life!

I think you missed my point - the majority of the 'music making community' isn't bedroom EDM hobbyists (though hobbyists in general account for the majority of DAW sales), it's songwriters.

I know it's easy to pidgeon hole a train of thought that doesn't span far from one's area of interest, however when we're talking about DAWs, we're talking about a tool for everyone involved in the music industry -- and in that huge swath from novice to professional, songwriters comprise the vast majority. Songwriters piano/guitar/vocal without the need for anything else, only needing something to record their takes. Gotta remember, we grew up on 4 tracks and the tracking process hasn't changed, just the equipment.

Recording studios have most digital DAWS these days, however the majority of their work is tracking.

And that's why anyone who says one of the most streamlined DAWs for tracking 'sucks', could use some actual experience in the field.

Because if you're using a computer and a midi controller to make music, it's pretty much classified as EDM. I don't make the rules, it's just a blanket term everyone is familiar with.

People don't usually use the DAW unless they want to get ideas down quickly or they are ready to flush out a song. Most songs start simply in the mind, then from mind to hand, then to paper. Then they might have something to actually play, sing and record. Not before then, thats the biggest mistake most amateurs make, just noodling around creating countless beginnings to songs that they never finish.

EDM = Electronic Dance Music, popular music intended for dancing. A vast majority of bedroom producers are doing some sort of EDM, but a lot are doing modern Jazz, experimental, ambient, industrial etc. etc. all categories that are not EDM. EDM is a real genre, it's not just what people call bedroom producers.

Your second paragraph couldn't be further from the truth. My main DAW is Digital Performer, and the vast majority of users are industry professionals doing soundtrack music, commercials, etc. etc. Just like everyone else they have a swath of ideas they kick around that eventually become a song, or get shelved.

Yeah, that's not how it works most of the time, everyone I've ever known who makes music, either professionally or as a dedicated hobby mostly starts a song by an idea that comes from messing around. It helps to have a framework, but hardly anybody I know thinks out an idea in their head and then makes a song at any rate more than a rare occasion.

Not saying some aren't good at improvising, but even that isn't a thought out idea that they then later commit to paper. Personally I can think of only a handful of times I had ideas that came that way.

I’m down with the “E” and the “M”. But not really the “D”. I don’t subscribe to Psuper’s assertion that its mostly songwriters (or usually to any of his other assertions). But I’m not sure I like the assumption that anything electronic automatically means that its meant for Dance. If EDM is a catch all term, maybe we should have a better one? Not picking on you, but this has bothered me for a while.
