I enjoy the immense sonic power under my fingertips for a reasonable price. Music is infinite and it is a pursuit that has depth that many other activities cannot get close to. I have not bought any synths for a good while now as I feel set for anything with what I have.

It is up to the individual to know what they need to meet their sonic needs and how much money they want to spend on it. There are few things in life more wonderful than music.

If you consider music a hobby then think of all the money people spend on other hobbies. The cost of playing Golf for example when there is very little chance of the average player ever making money from the sport. Or guys with model train layouts in their basements who have probably spent more than any of us have on software and you know they aren't making money from that hobby. The list goes on....

If you consider Music to be a business then think of how much money other businesses invest in trying to turn a profit.

So spending a little money on plugins, DAWs, samples, etc doesn't seem too far out of line.

Do you need every plugin ever made ? Of course not but like I said earlier as long as you're paying the bills I wouldn't worry about or feel guilty about spending a little money on your hobby/business.

I use it all the time.

I have an excellent guitar collection. Still a lot less than the cost of a decent car. We live in a city with great public transport. When we need a car, we rent one.

After buying Hive, I am starting to think I've got my lot when it comes to synths. They're starting to blur into the same things.

Here's a perfect example....yesterday I ran across a deal for a Reverb that lists for $199 but could be had for $9. I had already demoed the Reverb and wasn't terribly impressed but I figured what the heck even though I already have several other Reverbs I'll add it to my arsenal for that price and maybe after spending more time with it I'll find a good use for the plugin.

So I have a plugin I can enjoy until they call me home. I could have easily spent that $9 on a meal at a local fast food restaurant and that would be gone in a matter of hours or if I chose Taco Bell in a matter of minutes......

I'm a hoarder. I've always horded videogames, videogames mags, music gear porn mags. I've still got them stacked somewhere, all my SNES Super Play mags, Sound On Sound & Future Music.
Gear is expensive so I've only managed a few pieces of gear. I've kept most of the original stuff I have purchased, like my XP-50 & my first mixer, a Tascam Porta-03, a Dual 500MHz G4 Macintosh--it still works. I still have some clothes from my teenage years, even though they don't fit. I hoard sexy celebrity pictures. Porn!
I think the hoarding mentality was programmed into my brain as a child playing Mario games, & having to collect coins. :p

The great thing about VSTs is it doesn't take up any space. You can collect as many as you want without anybody knowing about it. But I do feel guilty in not using them enough & having spent so much on what is still a hobby.

I'm slow to upgrade my 'puter though. I'm posting right now from an 2013 iMac (not my main DAW though I do have Waveform on it)--an SSD breathed new life into this old system.
So much work transferring files around & installing & re-authorizing everything that I will go for 7 years before a major system upgrade. I also dabble in imaging & video, so that's a lot of software to reinstall.

To overcome the feel of guilt, you could establish an exercise. Every day throw one plug-in you haven‘t used for the amount of days which is the number of plug-ins you have installed, and incorporate it into your next song. If it does not inspire you at all, uninstall and pass the license on...

Feed the developers a bit

But these days i also have so much and just buy things from trusted developers i like.
Maybe 4-5 at best. A new developer had to come out with some outstanding never seen and heard stuff.
I would be in for some new physical modeling stuff like Sculpture on steroids or some creative FX like Kaleidoscope which i love.
Now today i guess i will spend more money for food than my monthly plug-in buys.
Everything is fine.

Turns out te-creating old synths is actually the hardest, because of all the subtle variations, nuances, constant movement and instability in every analog component of the signal path etc. It's almost like re-creating an acoustic instrument. Sampled patches aren't the same because it's just one static "snapshot" of the synth. You can't go in and tweak a sampled sound the same way you can with a full re-creation of an entire analog synth, so you're stuck with what the sound designers gave you.

That said, we're probably approaching the point where these analog emulations are as accurate as they'd ever need to be. I for one wouldn't care if a better Prophet emulation than Repro came out. You'd need scientific audio analysis equipment to even tell it was better.
