Great songs that would have been unremarkable if not for certain subtleties

When you're working on your music, sometimes there are a few little changes that can take it around the corner into something awesome. But what are they?

For example, John Mellencamp said there wouldn't have been much of a song if not for the clap track in "Jack and Diane". I also once read that R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" was an example of Michael Snipe polishing someone else's turd, where he somehow turned something mediocre into something great. (I would love to know what he changed and why.)

I want to study these transformations. Can anyone think of more examples?

Are 'Friends' Electric by Tubeway Army.

Apparently Gary Numan had two unremarkable songs, but when he accidentally played a wrong note in one of them he realized that the wrong note would link the two songs and make one great song.
