I’m interested in how different modulation effects work. I’ve been re creating them in the only way I can (without using the actual plugins), by using a variety of automation within my DAW. This is just to help me understand what is going on with particular sounds.

so far I’ve easily created simple tremolo (Volume automaton), flanging & chorusing (duplicate tracks with a simple delay set on one with an automated time shift)

I’ve been trying to create a Phaser effect by creating two duplicate audio tracks. One is left dry. The other is running through a series of All Pass Filters set up to sweep a notch frequency over a select band of frequencies, each All Pass filter notch is starting at a different frequency.

It’s not really having the desires effect. Am I missing something about phasing? Should I be setting the others on specific frequencies & depth?

Some info would be great to help me understand how a Phaser works :) thanks in advance.

All pass filters in serial , for feedback tap the last allpas output back into the first allpass ,
Add an inverter for negative feedback , or control it dynamically with a multiplier ranging between -1 and +1
Eyeball exchanging

Awesome thanks for the help.

Using the All Pass filter. Am I creating notches at certain frequencies? Do those frequencies need to move around?
