I am a live keyboardist
Been using mac/logic/mainstage for a long time..
But now i have bought myself a nice microsoft surface book

So i am looking for a new setup.
Reason cought my eye as a keyboardist. Seems to add a lot extra’s not found on other DAW’s
Which makes it interesting for a keyboardist, espescially now they improved VST performance with 10.3
Will be using it for both keyboard parts as well as backings

This brings me to my questions
-Does it support VST3 (important for integration of my Montage keyboard)
-when you rewire it into another DAW, can you load VST’s in the rack(ableton cant when slaved)
-how do you like the sequencer part?
-are you using it for backings. And do you like it?
-in ableton you can script your hardware controller into a performance, what options does Reason offer for this?
-i haven’t found a way to create some kind of setlist, and a way to preload racks, is such possible? (Planning to create a sepperate rack for every performance/song on our list, long loading times would be an issue)

Thanks for taking time to answer my questions..

- no VST3 support
- can't use VSTs when in ReWire mode
- sequencer is a mix of really great and some outdated features, e.g. I love the blocks mode, ability to have multiple MIDI lanes, ability to mute/solo individual lanes incl. automation, comping & pitch edit are supposedly awesome but I never used them; on the other hand automation doesn't have curves, the values are rarely connected to the parameter you automate (fader at 0dB can be a value of 723 or whatever), no track folders/groups
- no
- you can write your own scrips and some people do, but I've no idea if it's easy or not :(
- have no idea what you're asking for, but I suspect the answer is no

Hiya! I use Reason when I play live with my synthpop group Red Cell (I also work at Propellerhead). Feel free to ask me anything and I'll try to answer!

I have a really basic setup consisting of a MacBook running Reason plus a MIDI keyboard controller (Edirol PCR-500 or an Alesis V25). Each song has its own Reason project and it consists mostly of an audio track with backing tracks, plus 2-3 instrument tracks which I flip between using the MIDI controller. Nothing fancy, but it's super light-weight and sounds great.

this is far the best video about Blocks (this is the Reason "equivalent" of Live, BWS etc. clips) worth to check it

I don't mean automation presets like in FL, Cubase or - since 10.1 - Live. I mean actual curves - like between two *arbitrary* points placed at any point in time and any level. Sure, I can take the Toolbox, stretch the clips, cut them up, reverse, trim, scale, etc. but it's tedious work, like piecing the puzzles. If I need cyclically repeating *modulations* I'll use Pulsar, ZFO, Synchronous, Shape LFO, etc. If I need a one-off, unique automation, I need the curves.

And I know you're just trying to be helpful, but Reason really should've gotten the automation curves by now, like it has in Europa/Grain and other REs :)

I don’t think block is suited for live performing? Which seems to be the strength of lives cliplaunching

Altough it might be just as good for arranging a song as live..
