Combined with the integrated step sequencer (that can be turned into a piano roll), you have instant drum sequencing ease.
The piano roll editor (p-seq) in version 1.5 can be turned into a step sequncer at the press of a button.
wav sample and drag it to the center of the screen, and that automatically creates a sampler channel with no fuss
I'm not sure what a sampler channel is I'm afraid. But with P5 you drag a audio sample into the arrange window and it will become a track automatically. Because wav files are treated as groove clips, you can then roll it out into multiple instnaces. In fact the wav file can be opened in p-seq and the end point adjusted (just like any other pattern) and this will effect the roll out of that sample. If you want the same sample with different end points just duplicate it in p-seq and change the end point before putting it in the arrangement window.

Since it sounded good, I checked out the demo of P5, and I have to say, it's pretty good stuff (though I don't like the alt-shortcuts, I prefer F-key shortcuts). A few things I'm wondering/need to clear up.

Perhaps I was misleading when I said "step sequencer". FL creates, by default, one measure worth of 'boxes' (16 by default in 4/4) that represent 1/4 of a beat each. This can be turned into a piano roll at any time, and obviously you would do that for just about everything except drums or sound effects. However, for drums, this makes sequencing a pattern a matter of simply clicking once on the desired box to place a note, right clicking to delete it. No sort of grid or anything. It's referred to as a 'step sequencer' from FL, and it's extremely useful.

Because I only have the demo of P5, it doesn't seem like I can really test out how sampling works because it comes with next to no samples and an (apparently) nonfunctional browser. Times like these where it's really tempting to pirate so I can try out the real deal. I'm still a bit confused on how the browser thing works for oneshot (drum) samples: I realize you can drag MIDI or audio patterns and use the linear sequencer to put them in various places, so wouldn't I have to manually copy and paste a drum sample over and over or sequence it in the piano roll to get a simply drumline?

edit- just want to make it clear that I REALLY appreciate the help so far, everyone.

I like P5 well enough as far as design goes...the pattern based sequencing is very useful. However, I have difficulty hosting Reaktor...the windows aren't large enough to see the entire instrument panel. This is a big deal for me, since I use Reaktor all the time.

I think P5 is fast for putting things together. The native instruments are useful. But there's nothing you can do in P5 that you can't put together in most other sequencers, IMO.

cobalt...
To my knowledge ... The DXi Version of Reaktor worked Better in P5 than the VSTi.
If you click the little arrow on the Reaktor Gui it gives you the synth in as big a window as possible which is the same (there abouts)as in other hosts.
I noticed it a bit different but not overly...
Are you getting your windows enlarged properly and floating them?

To echo what some others have said, I think that the interface and gui of P5 is very good. For midi/softsynth use, the interface is fast, easy to use and not cluttered. MIDI editing is fast. Pattern automation works well. Track automation is a bit more clumsy.

Here is the big caveat. Some people have mentioned the problem of corrupted song files. I can attest to this. In fact, about 1 month ago every one of my song files was corrupted. Even files that I hadn't modified for some time became corrupted. I guess P5 was saving corrupted files for a while, but for a couple of months it was still opening them and therefore I did not recognize the problem. The clearest example of this was my autoload file. I hadn't modified it for months, yet one day it just stopped working. This was the same day that all my files stopped working. I haven't really used P5 for anything since. Cakewalk support has been very quiet on this, they tell me they're looking into it. I guess that's not going to help my old files though.
