I've been mixing and mastering with my headphones but I finally feel ready to invest in some studio monitors.

Here are some models I've been looking at:
-JBL 305P
-HS5 with subpac

Any suggestions are welcome :)

I asked myself this recently and settled on the iLoud Micro Monitors.
I'm pleased with my decision based on my requirements - desktop monitors for working in my DAW, in a small room, and the price range.

One nice feature is you can connect to your phone/tablet via Bluetooth, which is useful for streaming from your phone.

Btw, they're not perfect... one limitation is the speaker cable that connects them is a fixed length, and can't be extended, it something that's brought up in review videos but isn't an issue for me when I have them at my desk next to my screen.
They take a little while to warm up, and there is some audible hum in the high frequencies - but you get used to it quickly and doesn't affect mixing (for me). Some particular bass frequencies can sound a bit off (you can find some YT videos for that, but it hasn't been too much of an issue for me personally).

Even considering those potential downside I think they're definitely worth considering.

You can watch some comparison videos on YouTube, they seem to hold up well to bigger/more expensive speakers!

Looks like that limitation wouldn't let me get those :( I got some speaker stands that I plan on getting as well. They look cool though!

I am very happy with my ADAM T5Vs (with subwoofer).
They get very good reviews too.

I’ve been using the JBL 305s for years and I am happy with them. The key with any set of monitors is just spending time with them. Learn their strengths and weaknesses in your room, then you’ll be able to compensate for those weaknesses when you’re mixing. A good way to get familiar with your monitors is listening to a lot of music before using them to make critical mix/sound design decisions. I would suggest spending a couple days just listening. Pick bands/artists you’re very familiar with, not just the music you create. Pick something that you’ve been listening to for years, songs you’ve listened to in cars, studios, houses, backyards, etc.. You will start noticing pretty quickly what frequencies are problematic and you’ll be able to adjust accordingly. It’s going to take sometime but once you know your speakers well the mixing process will speed up.

Good luck!

I'd go for the Adam T7V's. No need for the sub. Amazing sound for the price. Look a bit plain and the power button plus the led is on the back which is annoying though. Maybe look at some HS8's if your room isn't too small.

I have KRK rokit 5 really satisfied customer

Mackie has a sale on their MR series monitors through May 31st:

I purchased a pair of MR624s for a tertiary set of monitors in my studio. Overall, I believe they are a great product and perform well above their price range.

Other considerations are the PreSonus Eris and KRK Rokit series. I would focus on the aforementioned options, in addition to the JBL 305P MkII, at this time, and use the remaining funds for a basic acoustic treatment kit.

How small, and how untreated? If it's too much it probably won't matter what speakers you get, the audio will be so messed up you won't be able to make a decent mix in that room. The frequencies get muddy, it's like trying to see through a frosted glass. So if the answer about your room is "pretty small and completely untreated" you should be looking at headphones: Sennheiser HD650, Beyerdynamics DT 990

Having said that, I think the minimum size for a decent reproduction is about 5" speakers. And you probably don't want to go much larger than that for a small room because the bass will take over the room and never sound right.

Fluid Audio should release new series of coaxial FX50/80 studio monitors soon, current FX8 ones proved to be very good bang for the buck.

Kali Audio is another new and interesting brand worth considering, also have new interesting stuff on the way and current proved ones.

I have both Yamaha (HS) and JBL (LSR) monitors. I find the JBL to be overly bright and even "tinny".

I prefer the Yamaha overall.

I didn't see that there's already a successor to the LSR 305's again... this of course makes it difficult again to recommend something, and to compare. Maybe there have been slight changes to the newer model, and it sounds different.

Just bought Genelec M030 and replaced my JBL LSR-305 monitors. LSR-305 were great for the price but there is no match for Genelecs. M030 are just great!

At least in the USA, a single Genelec M030 cost $495. The price of two monitors will fall outside the range of the OP's stated budget.
