I was really having trouble getting started with this (I've never done any sampling and mangling and stuff before) but I happened to have my trusty SM58 set up while the washing machine was on and this is the result
Meditation

Started in Tracktion and when I came to render,I discovered that the demo wouldn't let me so I took track by track into Sonar and used waveleb for fine edits. I also bought Tracktion
FX include ring modulator, band pass stereo, waves enigma, sonitus multiband, blockfish, X-cita and others that I have lost track of over the countless edits and versions of this. Phew! Thank Dog it's over and I can get back to concensus reality.

Okay.
At last I've managed to finish a track!
I gave up on the idea of singing and started from scratch... and Ended up with a better song as well.
Trash
Homemade Instrument's used
Homemade BucketBass(tm) - multi-layered sampled, tuned and stuck in SFZ.
Hit Crystal Glass - Played with water in glass for low hits and without water for high hits.. and stuck in SFZ.
Rim Crystal Glass - Played without water for pads and with water for distorted 2nd lead sound (I'm particularly proud of that sound... It's stuck through reverb and then distortion to get a really fat sound)
Pick-up-a-Stick Tracer(tm) hit against my desk and moved to create different tones.
Kinder-egg shaker erm.. shaken.
Also used the following downloaded samples
Junk Kit soundfont - Drums made from various junk
Slate Pad - scraped slate used for the broken pad
And I think that's it...
Made heavy use of me new Wider_Boy toy and the normal array of freebie plugins. This has taken way too much of my time in the last few days! It's hard work this sampling malarke! I've learnt a lot doing it though which is the most important thing I guess.
Now I must sleep!

A Very Slow Time Machine
I must admit I didn't initially have the contest in mind when I started this but then I realised it was in line with the theme. I was playing around with speeding up and slowing down some clock samples using granular techniques and making a sort of homage to Ligeti (and Ian Watson) - turning clock sounds into clouds.
This one is very minimalistic - simply one short sample of an alarm clock slowed down and granularised in various ways using Grainstates (Reaktor ensemble) with no other treatment or effects. Just recorded in one take as it came out with no layers etc.
I hope an alarm clock is considered "non musical" enough. It wasn't recorded by me I have to say - I just found it on the net ages ago (can't recall where from) and it was lying around on my hard drive with all the other junk I'd collected so I hope this is OK. If not and it gets disqualified never mind.

Well, I thought that I would play the 'Real World' idea to its fullest and feature every father's every-day 'Real World' type scenario. That is, the stuff that goes on each day - (with frustrating regularity) - at home. (Now if that's not a 'Reality Check' then I don't know what is)!!
This has been a lot of fun and a great way to get to know how to use sampling programs like Cool Edit Pro and Kontakt. I trust that although my sounds aren't breaking new ground sonically as some entries have -(being a newbie at this stuff), - it may put a smile on some faces, especially all you 'Dads' out there...
Just imagine an ordinary day at home, with the washing machine grinding away in the laundry, when the kids automatically start-up...(BTW has anyone found their 'Off Switch' yet?) If so, send me a PM quick!
All sounds (except the Marimba sample) were recorded using my Electrovoice ND-457 vocal mic and recorded into Cool Edit Pro, where they were then amplified, cleaned up, truncated, looped etc. I think that Cool Edit Pro is a very cool tool.
Incidentally, the kid's voice samples where recorded and then the context was totally reconstructed (to protect the innocent). Here is a list of what I used to produce my entry. Sorry for the long blurb, I don't have a digital camera!
Washing Machine Sample - looped & stretched to fit into 8 seconds using Cool Edit Pro and using Tracktion's sample player - (proudly brought to you by Fischer & Paykel and apologies to Patrick9);
Bass - derived from an accidental knock to the mic stand! Mapped into Kontakt;
Bell Tone - Wine glass and chopstick, mapped into Kontakt;
Shaker - Tupperware container, half filled with spaghetti, looped and stretched with Cool-Edit Pro and using Tracktion's sample player;
Kick - Tapping the lid of the same tupperware container as above, using Tracktion's sample player
Snare - smacking the lid on a sealed plastic bucket containing some bread-mix, using Tracktion's sample player and plenty of reverb;
Marimba - downloaded off the net, mapped to and sweetened with Kontakt;
Percussion - samples from various kitchen utensils: scraping plastic grater with chopstick, saucepan hit with wooden spoon, cupboard door slam, etc. using Tracktion's sample player and various vocal sounds from my youngest daughter.
The toy cupboard sounds - dropping plastic toys from it's plastic crate onto the vinyl floor;
Also starring the vocal talents of my whole family. Sharon (my wife), Eleanor (my 7 year old daughter), Mitchell (my 4 year old son) and Eva (my 2 year old daughter) and me!
Home Sweet Home

maybe stretching the rules to somewhere near their limit here i guess ... but its only a bit of fun so who cares ???
everything here comes from this one real-world sample ...
my voice and my nickname
... all played using the internal instruments (impulse and simpler) from live4 and pumped through my usual playground of effects plugins ...

This song is called:
Dos Sillas
which means "two chairs". All sounds come from two office chairs. I recorded five live tracks of me hitting various parts of the chairs. I used ACID Pro to record the tracks. Some tracks were edited in Sound Forge. The only effects I used were EQ, Reverb, Filter, and Compressor. Some tracks have volume envelopes and some are pitched down and up. Here is a run-down of all the tracks:
Scraper sound= weird plastic covering on the back of one chair
Shaker sound= brush stick rubbed on the surface of the chair
Bell sound= round metal parts under the chair, played with a triangle beater
Low drum sounds= hitting the seats and sides of the chairs with drum sticks.
Hope you enjoy

Ok,
Here is our song: Tin Can Reggae
The song is made up of the following samples:
Kick Drum: An unopened plastic bottle of Weed Killer, hit with the knuckles.
Snare Drum: A tin of Altoids, hit with the knuckles.
Rimshot: Wooden spoon, hit on a wooden desk.
Closed Hi-Hat: Side of a muted pot lid, hit with a piece of stiff wire.
Crash: Side of an unmuted pot lid, hit with a hacksaw blade.
Bass Guitar: Plucked string stretched over open pot.
Rhythm Guitar: Same as Bass Guitar, but held even tighter.
Organ: Elvis The Cat's meow, with a very short section looped to create the smooth organ sound. I knew I'd find a use for my cat some day...
Glass sound: Empty glass, hit with a fingernail.
Scratch Sounds: Stiff piece of wire, scraped over a large empty coffee can.
Accordion: Blowing through a straw with slits cut into its sides.
Kettle Drums: Bottom of pot hit with wooden spoon.
All samples were first manipulated within Sonar 4, saved as a wav file and then used within Kontakt.
Various effects including EQ's, compressors, Reverbs, Leslie, Modulators, too many to list here...

I saw this a few hours ago and decided it would be a good way to pass a sleepless night. started around 3AM going around the room with the mic and captured a bunch of sounds.
what I ended up with follows:
electric heater - sound effect

mobile phone (button tone) - noisey synth

computer keyboard (Shift key and H key, specifically) - snare drum

empty Patron bottle - bass synth and main sequenced synth

diaper disposal can - distorted percussion loop

scissors - percussion

metal change bank - shakers

my son, sean - lead synth, crying

the bass drum came from bumping the mic while walking around the room, and the coughs and throat clearing came from me throat (not pictured).
the percussion was sketched out in Buzz, along with some basic synth elements. some synths performed with Helios. tons of effect plug-ins used in processing. multi-tracking and effect processing in Cool Edit Pro.
sorry I'm not much for mastering, so make do.

Old Skool CRV
Feel free to play along in your car. Just don't try the door slam part while you're driving the freeway.

All sounds were recorded in or around my car, a 2000 Honda CR-V. Used a Shure SM-58 and a Sony portable Minidisc recorder to capture samples. Here are the sounds used:
keys
engine start/idle/rev/off
door o/c
glovebox o/c
light switch clicks
turn signal clicks
hood release clicks
elec. window motor
radio sample - "That's so old school" from some random commercial that was on as I scanned through the dial.
seatbelt
seatbelt warning beep
horn
synthesized samples:
Bass - used a high rpm sample of the engine noise and tweaked it in Reason's NNXT.
Kick Drum - close mic sample of me kicking a tire
Lt snare - tapping on license plate
Hd snare - cranking starter while engine is already running.
Vocode voice - Old skool girl run through Reason vocoder
Turntable - Old skool vox samples run through turntablist.
Delay synth - engine and window sounds loaded into and tweaked by Chameleon.
I was going to add more pictures, but we all know what a car engine and whatnot looks like, right?

This is perhaps the weirdest track I've ever made.

I took my daughter's bead bucket and rolled it on the floor in front of my mic. The entire son is based on variations on a single WAV file of about 2 seconds in length.
Tin Factory
Now I have to clean that metal out of my ears...

Let's call it...
Critter
Stuff used:

- End of cardboard tube struck with palm.
- Plastic cd cover thingy spun on desk and repitched to make drone sound.
- Rubber band stretched over drinking glass and plucked at various pitches.
- Zip, chair and hairdryer all used in the obvious way.
Cheers.
(Decided against 'Tract - the sequel'. Be grateful.)

This is my roomates dog Milo. He is an ugly pudgy little pug that is capable of a wide variety of "noises". This track features only samples of milo, except for the cameo appearances of my new case fan
(I know he sounds like a pig, but I swear he's a dog
VST's: SIR, mda RoundPan, mda RezFilter, mda RePsycho, FreeverbToo, +Fuzz, and I think that's it.
Anti-aliasing is for "synthmonk%ys".
