The only other thing that bugs me is that I only have so many USB3 ports on a MacBook Pro (I can get a hub, I know), and now I get to make a permanent spot for the Cubase Dongle. Not sure how I feel about that.
you only need to plug in the dongle when you want to use cubase. at other times keep it in safe place. so its not really permanent. but it does bring up the very common problem of users losing dongles. search forums. you will see posts. you probably want to keep the dongle with your car keys or something. :borg:

Unfortunately you need the dongle to run Cubase Pro in demo mode too. You might be able to pick one up at a local shop.

Really? $27 just to try Cubase? Amazing. There’s a Guitar Center just down the street from me. Steinberg feels confident. Is it all I could ever ask for in a DAW (just joking here, no need to answer)? I just jumped over to Logic from Live about 6 months ago. It’s not that I don’t like Logic (it is a little weird, though) I just am curious about other DAWs, since I was a Live User all the way back to 2004. I’ve started playing with the Numerology 4 sequencer too, anyone have experience with N4 inside of Cubase?

Logic and Cubase are probably the most similar DAWs. Both have notation, (now) expression maps, video import, midi functions, etc.

It's worth looking at the feature set and seeing if there's anything you truly need. I see Cubase as the 'most complete' DAW, but that's not to say it's without its quirks and intricacies.

There's nothing stopping you having Logic and Cubase. Logic does have Alchemy and PhatFX, don't discount them. Although you could counter them with Halion and the stock Cubase plugins. Cubase also has Padshop which is one of the best granular synths.

Think about the futures of both programs too - you will have to pay for yearly updates with Cubase, you might have to pay nothing for future Logic updates. Some would argue the upgrade fee is worth it for the new Cubase features and constant development.

I guess what I'm really try to say, is that it's your choice

My 2 cents: Cubase Pro 10 crossgrade is currently cheaper than Logic Pro X new. If there's a feature you really want (chord pads, per note expression, midi scaling, etc) and you have the money, get it! I don't remember the last time it was this cheap and it probably won't be again for a long time.

the Cubase or Nuendo trial is unrestricted in every way. Nuendo's is 60 days. Actually Nuendo acts like you're out of mp3 encodings the first time but it does them anyway every time. Feature, not a bug. :D

Pro Tip, and elicenser software actually informs of this (let's say Cubase 9x = Nuendo 8x in currency, it won't let you do both on one dongle: you need another dongle for this), a trial is per the particular dongle. ;)

No, if it's Pro version, without a license on the USB key it will simply quit, informing you it finds no license. There is no such thing as Demo mode, other than after an activated and started 30 days trial you're done on day 31. Actually if you don't quit on day 30 it doesn't just quit on you, it's done once you relaunch on day 31; depending on the hour. At some point you see '0 seconds left' on your trial but it starts, which is weird to see.

That’s good to know. I’ll have to see about doing a trial version

and all 3 Steinberg instruments are strictly from VST3

If you're primarily interesting in feel and workflow, then the Cubase Elemets trial might already be sufficient. As i said, that one only requires soft eLicenser, no dongle.

€ 49.50 is a decent enough upgrade price, but it doesn't add any features I need...
Does anyone think the new Groove Agent 5SE interface is a big improvement over 4SE?

Emphasis on "if you have the money". If you are just thinking of picking it but because of the fear of missing out but don't really have the means for it, then don't. But if the $160-166 price-tag you can currently get at retailers is not that big a deal for you, then you might want to pick it up regardless.

The way I got into Cubase is by picking up a left over boxed copy of an old version in a going-out-of-business sale three or four years ago. I think I paid $140 back then, including the eLicenser. Did not really need it and actually never used it until this year, when they came out with version 10 that included some unique features I actually needed and did not have in any other DAW.

Steinberg is a fairly reliable developer. And they recently have been advancing their software at a rather rapid pace. Much more so than Ableton does with Live or Apple with Logic.

I agree that Cubase is surely the quickest developing DAW, and the pricing scheme, and upgrade policy seems to work fine, with people lusting for new features and versions. They do what they do, and that's fine. It's nice that we have the luxury to pick the DAW which suits us the best.

Logic updates have been extensive and at a good pace for a while now... and of course all free

^^ Just to add to this, OP, get what you think you need. Don't just get because it's a deal. C 10 Pro is a high end pro DAW. Some believe it may be too much over kill for a home recording producer type enthusiast. Don't forget, you will get charged down the road when its time to upgrade to 10.5 or 11.0

Some other DAWs don't have that policy. ;-)

Not sure if I agree. I do have Logic but it is one of the few DAWs I decided to deinstall so I might be not completely up to speed. I really pains me to say this because I am a passionate Apple user, but Logic’s plugin scanner is currently the worst on the market. Which is astonishing considering it only scans plugins in Apple format. Does not give me a lot of confidence to be honest.
