First of all i posted this a minute ago in the discoDSP subforum just to see that the dude first changed the topic and then decided to delete the whole post.. unbelievable.. so i decided to post it here just for your information.

When i try to download something from my discoDSP account it say:
Cloud subscription required for download. Please purchase it. Thanks.
Also updates only available with cloud subs but that isn't what i want to buy. I do not need cloud subs.

Did i miss something?

Cloud subscription has been available for a while. It can be purchased at https://www.discodsp.com/cloud/

When someone purchases a license, our main reseller FastSpring delivers the download links. It's the best moment to download and make a backup of the files like any responsible user will do ;)

On the past, Members Area https://www.discodsp.com/members/ used to deliver the installers at no cost (as well as free sounds and other goodies). However, there have been countless cases of abuse and taking advantage of this system.

That's were discoDSP Cloud gets in: the user gets 1 year of upgrades as well as latest and up to date installers for any software liked to the account. So previous customer get 1 year Cloud subscription with any update (which is $29).

Hope it's clear now. Cheers.

Thank you for the fast response but i really have to say: Feel free to cut the bough you are sitting on.

Another memorable move toward to be on the verge of bankruptcy. You are way to small company to come up with 1-year-subs for updates. Remember not so long ago you dissappeard for month so i don't feel very comfortable to pay you beforehand.

Then he deleted the topic.

i've seen these threads where he would sell his plugins with a discount for a limited number of licenses (extremely limited, think 3 licenses) during Black Friday, and the offer would hang for days if not weeks. if no one is bothered enough to buy 3 licenses while they're at a discount, i don't think he's doing very well on the overall.

first he's asking people to pay for upgrade to new copy protection, now he's basically doing the IK-style "download reactivation fee", except he's not offering any sample libraries - the plugin downloads are always free even with IK - it's basically extortion. and $29 for a year? how often do his plugins get updated during the year? i for one don't remember last time he updated any of the plugins i owned (i sold all of them). this doesn't look very well.
I don't know what to write here that won't be censored, as I can only speak in profanity.

Another post of mine just deleted in the thread over at discoDSP forum.

I dared to wríte:

I don't feel comfortable to post further in a censored subforum where you change topics and delete conversations to your liking.

Seems like mine was also deleted 🤔 At least I can't find the post anymore.

Mentioned that it would've been nice if current customers were informed about the change with an email..

Wonder how's the license transfer now.. The buyer has to pay the cloud sub to receive the items?

It's worse than IK IMO. With IK, you only have to pay to re-activate downloads of sound libraries. As long as you keep those backed-up, you don't have to pay ever, and you can download and update the core software (Sampletank etc.) for free.

This is more like a $29/year WUP. If you don't pay, you can't update to the latest version of the software.

This doesn't surprise me at all.

it's even worse than WUP. with WUP, you still get all updates. you only have to pay WUP if you 1) want to sell your license, or 2) you're upgrading a major version (Waves v9 to Waves v10). minor version updates (e.g. v10.0 to v10.1) are free even if you don't have WUP.

Prediction: George is about to disappear from KVR for sometime...DiscoDSP website will suddenly shut down without warning or explanation. I dead set wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot barge pole these days. :tantrum:

Yeah, I have Discovery Pro 6.7, and I just noticed Discovery Pro 6.8 has been released. It says "6.8 is free for 6.5 and up customers.". However when I try to download it, I have to pay $29. That's not "free".

Also, it would have been nice with a notification about this change, so I could have downloaded 6.8 before it became a paid update.

Yes, a notification email would’ve been appreciated. Now that thread in the subforum is locked but I assume that is his right. It seems that discodsp ‘uses’ the cloud based subscription model just to generate more money out of their users. It’s different if the user chooses to go for a subscription (I do for SSL plugins), but to be forced to get access when the user didn’t agree to cloud subscription at the time of purchase, as well as little to zero notification about the change, that’s just wrong.

Post

I just tried to download my Discovery license purchased in 2006 and it's asking me to purchase a Cloud Subscription.

Ok George I know you'll be reading this so where do I send the bill to charge you for the patches I gave you for free all those years ago and are still included in the factory patches ? I figure $500 should cover using them for 13 years.

Send me a PM and I'll give you my PayPal address

I sent him email some time ago and asked, why can't I download anything. He replied that "cloud service is up soon, you'll be able to download then".

But not a single word of 29e fee.

Sounds like business as usual @ discoDSP.
