Any idea what the cost will be to upgrade from 4 to 5?

It will be free since you get lifetime updates. Imageline has 3 different versions of FL (tiers) and they determine what features are included for free with each version (Express edition, Fruityloops edition, and Producer edition).

Updates are free. Going from version 4.5 to 5 will be free.

Upgrade costs can vary based on the version you are using & the version you are going to (i.e. Upgrading Fruityloops Edition to Studio Edition currently costs 50 bucks).

It's interesting how much confusion this causes. :?

Whatever version you are using (Express, Fruity, Producer), you will get that version updated.

Carb.

...that is, if you have bought or received life-time free updates.

One reason that it causes confusion is that Producer doesn't mean the highest version. In FL 5, Producer will probably be the 2nd-to-highest Tier, with some other version taking its place. Yes, it's a valid point that you will never actually LOSE features, but don't expect that buying the current top version will allow you access to the coolest new stuff (I hope it can be expected, but Image-Line has the right to withhold any new developments as they should see fit... I hope that the major important updates will not be caste-specific).

i think IL is more geared toward a "modular" approach. I dont forsee FL5 having a new "tier" so to speak.. Theres the vid player coming out, which is seperate.. perhaps a FL5 Video edition maybe, but more likely just an addon plugin.

for instance, video is something i would never use...

so im glad that i dont have to pay for it.

ASIO audio recording and mixer tracks were a HUGE upgrade, added features, really... thereby justifying the upgrade price to producer. It seperated the average loop-making device from the production suite, and opened the doors for further development in that realm.

I have no problem with it.. if there were features i wanted for FL5 that i had to pay for that werent already part of the program, then fine :)

i think some people get far too hung up on this "lifetime free updates" thing. instead of "lifetime free updates" i think they really want "something for nothing" .

the policy is fair: the basic upgrade is free, some other nice bits cost extra.

better than native instruments which charges you for every little tweak & bug fix and abandons you if you decide to stay on an older version...

not entirely true.
major upgrade from reaktor 3 to reaktor 4 was free.

i think a better example is waves.. i think each version hardly adds anything new....

I actually think these free updates for life are a bad idea as far as making money for the company. I think most people would pay a small update fee each time it goes to version 5, 6, 7, etc. But too late now :)

it's never too late, how many people would actually stop using FL if they didn't get free updates? = NONE

what are you talking about? It's too late because they already promised free updates.

yeah and they could break that retarded promise very easily....

and depending on how far they are to go with FL studio i.e. cubase level then they should break it...

it would be the dumbest buisness move if they did not.

their business model is fine, and clearly isn't hurting them too bad.

FL updates are free saving them from building their business around trying to crank[1] out a new major version release every year whether it is needed or not.

Instead they can concentrate on improving the code at their own rate and build new revenue streams from side products, such as Sytrus.

free basic upgrades are intrinsically good for everyone because it means less support.

if people are having a problem the first reply can be "are you using the latest version?". if people have to pay for upgrades then you'll have users spead over the version numbers and refusing to upgrade (but still demanding support for their version) because they don't want to spend any money.

the trick is to make sure your "pay for" extras are actually worth bothering about.
