I use Reaper because i'm a good protestant who believe in the value of hardship through terrible UI. I also enjoy keyboard-centric workflows and being free from the distraction of bundled libraries and bloat. The utilitarian minimalism keeps me focused, centered and creative somehow.

I chose Bitwig because I'm hippie and I like the 70's colours

Maybe not too old, just too grumpy. Of course, I used to say the same thing but times change and I've changed with them, as scary as that thought is.AnX wrote: Fri May 31, 2019 6:13 amcant move on, i would have to quit music. im too old to waste my time learning a new host, it would be a massive undertaking
When I say "sampler", I am always thinking of multi-sampled instruments - soundfonts, sfz, etc.. One-shot samples and loops I'd just load into a drum instrument or an audio track. In my hardware days I used my Akai S612 for that stuff, with it's minidisk rack loaded and ready to go.jancivil wrote: Fri May 31, 2019 2:44 pm Cubase has a sampler instrument where you can take whatever you're doing and make an instrument out of that, essentially. and those files appear in the Audio Pool, and as that type for clarity.
I am really struggling to find time to put into it. I am a little envious that you're making such strides. I never think to DnD stuff, I always look for the more formal way to improve my understanding of what is going on.Psuper wrote: Fri May 31, 2019 5:31 pm I'm finding so many amazing ways to work in Cubase. I think the best way to describe the experience is "Drag and Drop" heaven.

well, you prob spend much more time doing music than i do, so the investment vs reward is different. I prob spend more time fishing than i do making music.BONES wrote: Sat Jun 01, 2019 1:39 amMaybe not too old, just too grumpy. I have a look over the fence once in a while, just to look in the neighbours garden, unfortunately...there's barely anything worth looking at.
Saying that though, my sunken garden was pretty bare for a while, but it was a small price to pay when it pretty much almost killed me as a 15 year old kid to create this over 3 weeks with my Dad back in 1993. Being a stones throw from the beach, every pebble came from that piece of ground...(it's illegal to take pebbles from the beach). So yeah.. it's pretty bare stones as you could say, kinda like how I like my DAW to be. Doesn't look great from that view at this stage, but something beautiful became of it in the following months and years later.... It was only a few years after where started making music with Octamed Soundstudio on my Amiga looking back... if I got the chance, but anyway...some years later we won a trophy for what we created, so it kinda paid off...
Use to have a cabin cruiser boat in the back garden, so use to go fishing out on the bay which was great, catching cod, bass, flatties.. then we sold it and this happened.. To the rear is a railway line
and a huge maltings factory, so you can imagine the fun I had growing up climbing on the grain container trains with friends as a kid..

I have started with Cubase many years ago. Now I use Studio One since V1 but current version tires my eyes and I can not concentrate. love the new Cubase 10. Both features and GUI (Mostly)compared to Studio One.
It is just hard to give up Studio One's speed and ease of use. Maybe it is just habit and I should spend more time with Cubase and get used to do things differently. Any switchers from S1 to Cubase?

There use to be a free version on computer music magazine called Cubasis, I didn't take to that DAW back then, picked up Magic Music Midi Studio Generation 6 which was a clone of Logic and preferred that which is funny as Studio One feels weirdly similar.andypryce wrote: Sat Jun 01, 2019 8:05 am I have started with Cubase many years ago. I thought about getting Cubase 10 in the past week, the text of the GUI is easier on the eyes with what looks to be emboldened text thus a bit more clearly defined in places, but I just didn't gel with Cubase's arcain UI from when I did test the previous version 9.5. I've yet to test version 10 but other than the browser they kinda stole from Presonus, I don't think there's much change other than some face lifts of the instruments/effects. I mean it's tempting to buy Cubase just for it's clarity and it does have one or two things I'd like Studio One to have, but really... with all the hassle of dongles (I've still got one I've to use for Reason 7.02), the additional expense and feeling compelled to upgrade yet another DAW.
For me, I don't feel it's really worth it... Studio One belies it's depth and flexibility with the tools it has and how quick and intuitive it is to work with. I really didn't like Cubase's way of handling the windowing and navigating I remember and stuff like an additional over complicated transport bar floating about, everything has rounded corners urgh... rather than sharp space effective straight lines.
Studio One's lack of things that Cubase 10 has, isn't enough to draw more pennies... Studio One is being developed at a pretty rapid pace and cheaper to upgrade in comparison.
The grass might be greener in some places, but I can't ride two horses on either side of the fence at the same time. In one night I switched to Studio One from Reason completely which I used for 13 and a half years regularly. I got fed up of always feeling like I was always on the slow lane of the carriage way.. Patience ran out...
Another aspect of Stinberg is whether they are actually listening to it's users, and not so much behind a corporate wall image... non receptive to feedback as such. Their forums and the users over there, really don't seem to have be that happy with how Cubase was going and with things going unresolved in their programs. Whether that's the case more recently, I don't know...but for now...and with a small boat load of refinements in 4.5 recently...I'm not going to straddle two similar DAWs, I don't have the time, and willingness to confuse my head as I slowly move into my 40's lol...

I have Studio One and the hard drive license protection has always worked fine. But I have had numerous problems with i-lok protection going awol. I was apprehensive about the Cubase dongle system, but it came in the box, and when it is plugged in Cubase works, and it stops when the dongle is removed. This means that Cubase will run on any computer I am using. I like the dongle system.THE INTRANCER wrote: Sat Jun 01, 2019 9:25 am but really... with all the hassle of dongles (I've still got one I've to use for Reason 7.02), the additional expense and feeling compelled to upgrade yet another DAW.

Yeah, I know how they work..I got one when I bought Propellerheads Record 1.0 back in 2009, and used it when I had the 'Reason & Record Duo' package on my Laptop. It was more fragile than I thought it was, they easily split apart, and can be easily lost if not careful. For me though, I just don't like them taking up USB ports that I could otherwise be using for something else and the requirement to have them at all.dellboy wrote: Sat Jun 01, 2019 9:37 amI have Studio One and the hard drive license protection has always worked fine. Studio One for example can have 5 computers running offline once the keyfile is downloaded and transferred to the offline computer. Obviously you need a internet connection where as with a dongle you don't but then, but providing you know your account login details, you can go to a library or cyber cafe to access that. Won't help if you fell from the sky and landed on a island in the middle of the Atlantic but that's unlikely in any case.

The Cubase dongle does work from a USB HUB port.THE INTRANCER wrote: Sat Jun 01, 2019 11:30 am

I guess the best solution would to be have the option to use either system on the same DAW - best of both worlds.
