If you list the dark side, in addition to the above, the two most important occasion, which led to a very unhappy chain-reactions, were
1) US support to the Sovjet military resistance/talibans in Afghanistan, and US support to Saddam,
and 2) the return of Ajatollah Khomeini from Paris exile to Iran, and the Iran-contra case.
Much of the 21st century terrorism is explained by the incidents after these misscalculations/lack of history knowledge.
