the Well-Tempered Clavier
For my description of fugues and fugal techniques I mainly use examples from Bach's Well-Tempered
Clavier. Of course, there are many other works of Bach in which the fugue, or fugues play a key role.
The first works that come into mind are maybe the Art of Fugue ( Kunst der Fuge) or the Organ
Fugues. But we can also think of the many examples of fugues or fugue-like passages in for example
the Masses and Cantatas. On the other hand, the Well-Tempered Clavier was and is over all other of
Bach's works the great example for all subsequent composers who have written fugues. Therefore,
before going to pretty 'technical' aspects of fugal composition, some general information about the

Indeed, and although his fugues are truly deserving of serious study, I've always enjoyed how he used the techniques in many of his other works.

Earlier this year I made my "Plugged-In Bach" which of course put me a fugue state or two

I also wanted to see what I could do to move one of the pieces out of the Baroque thing and into another space without being dishonorable to the piece.

If you listen to tracks 4-5 you hear me try a more Carlos approach then my own take on realizing those notes in what seems another form.

My two-cents is that you can and perhaps it has already been done by guitarists like Richie Blackmore or maybe Yngwie Malmsteen. The musicality of the form may not sit well with the "modern music" ethos prevalent in EDM and Pop but it is definitely doable.

Soon after Paul Hindemith came to the United States during WWII he wrote Ludus Tonalis which contains some really nice fugues.

I recently became interested in fugues, and am looking for resources (online, books, etc.) that anyone could recommend to learn more about how fugues work, how to write them, etc. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Fugues can have very strange timing which can make them very hard to read. I'm not classically trained, I'm trained in pop and R&B/blues but I learnt to play a fugue in Synesthesia as my playing technique and ability is better than my reading skills. I just slowed it down and learnt it in sections before playing it faster. If you play one, you'll start to notice patterns and things that might help you in writing one.
