Here's my best guess:

In your def.all, in the first MIDI track you've got SR202 as you say. Now, Cubase normally sets the MIDI channel=track number, so MIDI track #2 is on MIDI channel #2. If you load a DS404 into track #2 you need to CHANGE the MIDI channel to #1 or you need to change the timbre you are editing in DS404 to hear your tweaks.

Does that sort it out?

ok sorry dave my mistake... :oops:

have to admit it was rather confusing as whatever midi channel i was using other than channel 1 to try and play the sampler (one was already being used in my song and def.all) it still played back the sound but no squelchy tweaks affected it...
